My ISP lies about my cable speed!!

I got a nice letter in the mail from Cox letting me know that my existing 4 mbps cable internet will be speeding up to 8 mbps starting on October 1st. They also mentioned that I will be paying $10.00 a month extra.

Now, with it being October 7th, I decide to check my speed

I am getting 1.2 mbps!!!!! I wish it was Monday right now because I am going to rip whatever helpless customer service rep I speak to a new one Not only am I not getting the 8 MBPS they told me I would be getting, I'm not even getting the 4 MBPS that I was paying for previously..... i probably NEVER had 4. I really hate these corporate jackholes that dick you around and dick you around. It's not even worth my time to call customer NOservice because they're just going to have me check stupid settings and make up lame excuses.

Hey Ryan, I am on Cox as well. When I run that test I get anywhere from 4.8-5.1 Mbps.

When I run this test only seconds later it only shows up as 2.7-3.1 Mbps.

The modem on a cable connection is not necessarily capped... A cable connection is a shared connection, it's speed varies by the amount of people online using that ISP... Try a speed test at 3 in the a.m. It will be as promised...

I had cable for about 4 months and went back to DSL for this exact reason, my top speed is less, but I test almost always the exact same... When I had cable (in a ISP service area of 500,000) I had connections at 5 pm that were slower than dial up... this was some time ago so speeds were less anyway, I believe my cap at that time was 1.5...

Those speed tests have so many variables it's impossible to know. I've run my cable modem on 5 different sites and never once came close to being the same.

My company makes DSL chips, years ago we used to advertise just like others that cable slows down because of users online but the reality is DSL users don't get the advertised speed either because the further you are from the CO the slower it is.

Theoretically there's 50MB dsl all over Japan now, they call it 40 because 50 is in a lab in perfect conditions, and the average user gets something like 22.
VDSL and VDSL2 can get 100 in perfect conditions.

My comcast cable last time I checked was between 2 and 4.

All of Asia are receiving speeds this fast from a report I read and at a $10-$20 per month USD equivilant... China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan... Some day for us maybe, but probably not.

Blame the phone companies, we could all have DSL that fast right now but they're so slow in deploying because they don't want to upgrade equipment. ANd now with VDSL2 and optical coming along they're now figuring DSL is dying anyways so why upgrade?

Japan has had 40MB for about 2 years now. My company is getting killed now because everyone is going to fiber(optical) in Japan and when they switch, their DSL modem goes back into inventory.So when someone does sign up for DSL, they get a used modem and since we sell chips that go in modems, we get nothing when they reuse modems.

We pay about twice as much for DSL and get like one tenth the speed. Almost everyone where I work has cable modem at home, and they design DSL chips for a living.

You've apparently known for almost a year that your isp lies....

Maybe the 1 hour thing is a bit over blown, especially since my service provider lies about how fast my connection speed is.

firstly you know it is bad... are you kidding or were you testing it will all sorts of things running?

Secondly, did you run this test while other computers were dowloading something?

I have had 3 DSL providers, if any of mine were that low I would call them and have them come out and fix something, because something is very wrong...

I did have a speed problem once with DSL and they had to replace my modem...

You guys need to feel lucky you don't have Tempe Wireless. The QoS is pathetic. One minute everything is working fine, the next minute it is unable to connect or is connected but not receiving data. I come back 15 minutes later and it's working again.
