Not unlikely.

I had to replace mine recently because of frequent disconnects and incompatibility with new routers.

No problems since I got a new motorola modem.

if it's that old it doesn't support DOCSIS 2.0, maybe not even 1.1

Faster, better chip, better software. Most of them can be upgraded (Software) remotely, my cable company does mine that way periodically.

No problems since I got a new motorola modem.

I can only speak from my own experience, but replaced my 6-year old cable modem 10 days ago.

I am now consistently getting 8.0-8.5 on the speakeasy test and 5 mbps on the bandwidthplace test. Almost double what I got with my old modem and more importantly, I haven't had to recycle it (which was almost a daily occurrence before).

FWIW, I got the Motorola Surfboard model SB5120. About $79 at Best Buy. The pain is that if you swap cable modems with Cox you have to call them up to give them your modem info before it will work.
