My Camp Observations

Saw Friday morning's practice along with the scrimmage. Just a few notes that I saw.

McCown looks like everyone has said, he looks good. I didn't see him make any really bad throws, and the guy can still run. Didn't seem to force the ball either.

Shipp looked good, up until his injury. Hopefully he gets back soon.

Boldin and Fitz are just what we expected---VERY GOOD!

BIG was getting destroyed by Berry, and BIG had to hold Berry a few times during practice, to which Berry yelled one time "Come on Ref, call that ****!"

King looked alright, I think he'll be adequate as a backup.

Other then that I didn't really notice much. Got to meet Jim and Melanie, both very nice people and great Cardinal fans....hope to catch up to you guys at a game sometime!

I'll try to post some of my camp pics later.

Oh, and forgot to add..

In the scrimmage Croom looked great. Seemed fast and strong, and had some good moves, at one point juking the defender along with himself I think as Croom ended up falling. May have found a keeper there.

One more thing:

Watching all the players on the field walk over to the cart that was carrying Shipp off the field to lend their support was great. Hope to never see that happen again, the injury, but I think this is quickly becoming a "team".

While I did not attend the scrimmage, I watched a few practices during the week. This is what I observed:

1) O-line coach is very detailed on fundamentals of hand and footwork. Firing off the ball, and getting the first hit on the opponent. I absolutely love Wileys comment about making the o-line more aggressive. He said, the opponent may win the game, but they will know they had to fight for every inch on that field. No more 80% effort from this group. What this group needs is a week with Conrad Dobler. I want a line that will bury you on every play, and then step on you when its done, NO MERCY. By the 4th quarter, its in the bag.

2) Bertrand Berry is one quick dude. Cat quick like Rice, but without the "tude". After practice he high fived my boys and gave them each one of his gloves. Awesome expierance for the little ones.

3) Defense is much quicker. The front seven will cause havoc this year. Looks like a copy of the Dallas Cowboys defense. Smaller but very quick to the ball.

4)McCown looks good so far. I like his approach towards the sudden responsibilities he has. Confident, seems to make the smart play instead of trying to make something out of nothing. He will have a good year this year, then next year, watchout.

5) The WR's are great. We will definatley have the opponents on their heals trying to cover all the weapons we have.

6) Finally I truly believe if we stay healthly, and our O-line and D-line improve to the point where we are a middle of the pack in terms of total yards gained and allowed, we have a shot at 7-9. Throw in a few breaks our way, and who knows, maybe 8-8. We are due for a run of good luck, and the color of good luck is GREEN.

Something we have not seen in a Cardinals team since 1994. Along with coaching a primary reason the Cards are always 5-11.

Other than Bertrand they are the same guys as last year. How did they suddenly get so much quicker???? No more "read and react too late"???

Good reports. Keep them coming if you go to Flagstaff next week.

It was great to meet two future ESPN sportscasters from Tucson!

I beleive they are a faster team because of the change in the defensive scheme. Read and React sucks. Lets blow up the play before it has a chance to develop. They may be the same players, but freeing them up to attack, they instantly become faster due to the lack of thinking first and then reacting to what they see. NOw they have one job to due regardless, They each attack a zone in front of them and try to beat the offense to that spot.

Just for grins I went back and read some of the camp reports from 2003.

Sure enough all the reports included statements about how much faster the defense looked.

Regardless I agree that the R&R Sucks big time. Don't understand why anyone would use it. Must be some personell groups that it fits but I've never seen them.

Agreed....and after a 4-0 preseason most of us were sky high...Hopefully we're not back to earth after week 1....
