Not much else to do when sick but read and watch tv. I came across something I found interesting, a FA who seems to fit our defense, seems to fit Green's profile of age, and of guy you played against.

Marlon McRee from Carolina, he's the guy who had 2 picks when we lost to them. McCree is playing SS in Carolina because they have Minter at FS and their first round pick Thomas Davis wsa supposed to move to LB, then in minicamps showed he was nowhere near ready to play LB so they moved him back to SS and then discovered he couldn't start their either so they got McCree on a one year deal.

They're paying Davis too much to sit him again next year and what I read says he's coming along nicely now at safety, they use him as a hybrid SS/LB but they think he'll eventually be a good player.

McCree doesn't figure to be a high dollar FA, 28, a lot faster than Griffith so he should help coverage, but since he's starting at SS this year he can also fit Clancy's system which seems to "like" playing 2 SS's at times.

Excelent sleeper pick. Fits the just now coming into his own mold that Green seems to like.

My Sleeper is Najeh Davenport. 250 lb RB with light feet who can bust out to the edge or get you your 3 yards. Not your typical bruiser put your shoulder down type but he is so big and has great leg drive he is a pain to bring down and the first tackler rarely does. Perfect fit to pair with JJ.

If he's healthy, I'll agree with you on Najeh......healthy being the operative word.

Russ,

If we do truly end up playing with two SS's, isn't Shazor penciled in for this position? Would we need to use FA dollars on McCree?

He always seemed to be nicked up. Not sure if he is a sleeper though, a lot of teams are interested.

A few things. McCree isnt really just a SS that is just what he is playing this year becuase Minter is playing FS.

Also Shazor will never start opposite of Wilson. Shazor is even slower then Griffith. McCree is a lot faster then Griffith and Shazor both. Much more of a center fielder then both combined. Shazor will never be anything but Wilsons backup, or apart of some sort of big secondary unit at the goal line.

When I think of a sleeper I think of a guy who wont cost much and may start to really break out, plus he is coming off of IR from a ankle injury back in Game 5, hence lowering his value even more and may scare a few teams off.

Najeh was starting to break before his injury cut that short.

That would make our starting backfield next year...

CB rolle
CB green
SS Wilson
FS McCree

Definitely looks good on paper... but without a real DT, we're still screwed.

By that definition he's a sleeper. He's been "about to break out" for 3 years now, but always seems to get beat up. Injuries are a concern, especially as a big back.

I dont think injuries are that big of a concern. He was out his first year with a broken eye socket. Not really a knee injury or something.

He played 15 out of 16 games the next year and only missed 5 games due to a hammy the next. Not really a big injury concern in my eyes. And his last broken ankle wasnt nearly as bad as Shipps was.

And with a guy like Green in front of you, there is no way that you can be allowed to break out. Jordan did it with Martin in front of him but he still got a lot of carries.

Here is the trade idea:

We get Wilfork for free if we take back Starks.

That is way to much in NE's favor they wold have to throw in a 5th round at the least for me to like that trade. :D

That's 3 years of missing serious time. Now, the injuries are not things like reoccuring hamstrings, but it is a medical history to be concerned about. Plus, he always seemed to go down when Green got hurt and he has to carry the load. I worry about big-bodied backs taking a beating from all of the hits.

I am not to concerned about his eye socket being a future problem and something to be concerned about. He only had a hammy problem for 5 games another year.

I agree, they are trauma injuries - injuries that aren't caused by a lack of conditioning. BUT, big backs take big hits, and Davenport could be one of those guys who can't handle 20 carries because he takes those huge hits. His injury history is a concern. Now, sign him cheap enough and it is risk/reward, but enough teams will bid to make it pricier than most people think.

I wouldn't mind going after the Giants cornerback Will Allen. This was his fifth year so he is hitting his prime. He ran in the 4.3 40yard dash range at the combine when he came out. As much as I would love to sign Nate Clements in free agency, Will Allen would be alot cheaper and could cover any speed receiver that we played against while Rolle covered the big guys.

I don't think any corners come cheap in FA. Much rather use those dollers on either of the lines. Preferably DT, G (Either side) And C.

True but we have more than enough money to sign one. There are no top free agent DTs to sign this year and we already have Elton Brown, Oliver Ross and Reggie Wells that we can put at guard. Unless we sign someone like Steve Hutchinson or Vince Manuwai, there aren't many top rated guards out there to be had. We do have plenty of money to sign both a top cornerback like Nate Clements and Steve Hutchinson, the problem is there are many other teams that can spend alot of money next year as well and I'm guessing that Seattle and the Bills will put the franchise tag on both of them.

I really feel like we have more than enough talent at corner. OG is horrible. I'm not sure how people can look at our line after this year and say "we have X, Y, and Z".... if they were that good we wouldn't have played so poorly. Upgrades are needed.

I'd rather spend 5 mil on a guard than Clements who would force Macklin and Green to the bench.

My Sleeper FA is............. CATO JUNE. He is quick, excellent in coverage and has excellent hands for a LB, I loved him lasy year, in only his second year, and I believe his norml comp. is only like a 5th. He was out of position a decent amount of times in 04, but Cato ahs really improved on that this year has yet to hit his prime and would be a monster FA pick-up. On the sad side, if the Colts let him go they are crazy.
