The Suns trading of Deng was due to a major miscalcuation. Their hope at the time was that they could get both Nash and Okur which was why they cleared so much cap space. Unfortunately, Okur got a far larger deal than the Suns could afford.

If their plan had worked, it would have been a major coup. The problem was that there was not much choice when it fell through.

The real world of being a GM is that they can only deal with what is known at the time. Clearing cap space is always a risk if the guy you want isn't there or turns you down. BC gambled and won with Nash and lost with Okur. They won't say that because they try to have us believe they had Q targeted all along, but that is clearly not the case.

That and the Suns didn't seem to be enamored with Deng either. They were not impressed with him. Hind sight is always 20/20 but the Suns scouts missed something when scouting Deng.

I certainly sounded like Iggy would have been taken rather than Deng. That would have been better than Q, but the deal was not illogical. As it was, if the Bulls had stayed crappy for another year everything would have been fine.

That wasn't the miscalculation. The Suns had two players that they wanted at #7, Iggy or Deng. They didn't believe that either was going to be available (remember a lot of people had Iggy going as high as 3 to the Bulls) - so they dumped the pick early.

Right after the draft, they were kicking themselves for it.

Do we actually know that? I'm serious. If their plan was to use the cap space for someone other than Q, I cannot really believe they'd publicly admit it. All I've heard is people saying that they've heard from other people who say they've heard, etc.

Its kind of a combination. The first preference was Deng or Iggy, if they weren't available then they wanted to sell the pick to get free agent money.

Okur did appear to be the first option, and was actually followed by Turkoglu. Then Richardson.

Chicago only agreed to the trade if it happened before the draft shook out. They apparently thought their guys would be available, while the Suns didn't.

The Suns should have insured themselves a little better by asking for protection of the pick being in top 10 or else they could defer it for another year, which Bulls used to do a lot. But I guess they were so sure that Bulls would suck that they didn't ask for it.

Yep. Or they should have read into the fact that the Bulls were looking at the exact same players, and obviouslly they thought the players were going to be there.

It was a completely botched deal.

It was a mistake yeah, but there isn't any point worrying about it now. It happened and it can't be changed. Every team makes mistakes and misses out on players they could have got. The Suns have made plenty of great deals in their time so it all evens out.

We do this all the time. In the old days it was to prove BC is an idiot, but now that he's gone it's hard to tell what the point is except that the Suns hate to draft people.
