Mathias Tjarnqvist

Tjarnqvist, 27, registered 1-3-4 and 4 penalty minutes (PIM) in 18 games played with Dallas this season. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound native of Umea, Sweden also recorded 1-1-2 in 2 games with the American Hockey League’s Iowa Stars this season. In 2005-06, Tjarnqvist collected 2-4-6 and 18 PIM in 33 games with Dallas and 17-12-29 and 28 PIM in 34 games with Iowa. His 17 goals with Iowa ranked 5th on the club despite his only playing 34 games with the team.

In 69 career NHL games over 3 seasons, Tjarnqvist has registered 4-8-12 and 24 PIM. Tjarnqvist was selected by Dallas in the 3rd round (96th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Wasn't it just last offseason that management was talking about how they were going to keep their young core (Comrie, Nagy, Ballard and Z) and build around them? Whoops...

The real problem for the Coyotes is the best thing they got in return was a draft pick. We all know how well they draft

I think the only players on the team who were drafted are Doan and Sjostrom. Then again, Doan was drafted when we were the Jets.... so that means years and years of being inept.

True.

How much longer does the Barnett/Gretzky regime last?

If you read the Republic articles this last weekend, apparently the two sides (Nagy and Coyotes) were "way apart" in discussions.

They have raised the white flag. The Coyotes are out of the playoffs. They were going to try to re-sign Nagy, Doan, and Perrault before they become free agents. Nagy was way off so they have now traded him and got a pick instead.

Doan and Perrault are next to negotiate the re-sign. I figure they will either come to terms wth the Coyotes or they will be gone also.

Also, Cujo is playing his last year so I see him being moved also.

I don't disagree with the move. You don't pay Nagy $3+ million a year for what he's doing on the ice. I know they wanted to keep him, but at the same time, his asking price was way too much.

From azcentral.com.

PLANTATION, Fla. -- Sensing they were not going to be able to re-sign impending unrestricted free agent Ladislav Nagy before the NHL trade deadline later this month, the Coyotes dealt their points leader to the Dallas Stars on Monday morning.

In return, Phoenix received a first-round pick in this year’s NHL draft and fourth-line forward Mathias Tjarnqvist.

“We weren’t winning,” Coach Wayne Gretzky replied when asked about trading Nagy, who leads the team with 41 points but who scored only eight goals. “I know he’s a good player but sometimes a player needs a different view, and we didn’t want an asset to just walk out the door (after the season).”

Nagy practiced with the Coyotes on Monday morning. While he was doing so, the Coyotes were completing the deal.

Two other teams also were willing to part with a first-round pick, but Phoenix opted for Dallas.

“I’d like to have stayed in Phoenix but they did not want me,” Nagy said as a cab driver packed his gear into the trunk. “We talked a little bit about (a contract extenison) but they did not offer me anything.”

The Coyotes are 14 points behind the Western Conference playoff field with 26 games left.

More trades, likely involving playoff-tested veterans in exchange for prospects and/or high draft picks, may be coming soon.

In 69 career NHL games over three seasons, Tjarnqvist has notched four goals and eight assists.

I really love this trade.... Mike Barnett proves that he's a genius.....He's definitely the best GM of all the 4 major sports franchies here in Phoenix.... He didnt have that title until Joe G Jr. left the Dbacks front office a cpl years ago....Josh Byrnes should even take notes from Barnett........

Obviously, that was utter sarcasm at its finest...Mike Barnett should be terminated after this deal.... He again got fleeced.... Why was he in such an immediate hurry to trade Nagy? He had over 2-wks heading to deadline and he could have probably up the ante a lot more for a player of Nagy's magnitude, but no...instead.. he accepts some reject player along with a draft choice of a team that's currently 6th place in their conference..and now w/the addition of Nagy will probably continue to climb in the standings... So... the.. Yotes essentially netted a 20+ overall pick along with a career Minor Leaguer for an all-star high prolific scoring player... True, Nagy is too streaky.. can be one dimensional... but...he's flourished in some key areas...That enough should have guaranteed them a better package in return....

Also, to add insult to injury... it's to an inter-division rival... does that make sense? I bet Dallas re-signs Nagy to a long-term contract and he'll always come back to haunt the Yotes...Plus, the Yotes have horrid scouting, so vesting any faith in them drafting a player of any worth is disheartening enough........Ahhh... whats the positive of the deal? People may say.. well.. at least they didnt let Nagy leave for nothing in return... Hmmmmm..they essentially did....

Oh.. I'm absolutely afraid on who they will get for Doan and whoever else they trade.... This franchise absolutely has no direction...

Youth movement? Oh.... that's BS when they emphasize that... Hello, Roenick, Nolan, and in recent years Nedved, Amonte, Ricci, Hull....etc.. clueless.. no direction.....nothing whatsoever......

If they were logical... they would explore trading CuJo to Detroit who is in need of a veteran goalie...but Ken Holland and Co. will yet again outclass Barnett......

Also, rumor has it that the Yotes will be interested in signing Todd Bertuzzi during the offseason.. .yes...... the same Bertuzzi who did one of the most illogical/idiotic acts ever in the history of hockey... yet..another player who's at the downside of their career.. but hey... that's what Barnett is fixated with... lord... about time to bring in some true hockey blood for a change..... Not even Gretzky is working any wonders here.. and how could he with such an inept front office....

:fans:

I am elated with this deal, I am surprised so many are against it. I was almost certain that we would get a lot less than a first round pick for Nagy. I never thought somebody would be foolish enough to give up something that substantial for Nagy's eight goals. The question with Nagy has never been talent. The lightbulb may one day go off inside his head, but that certainly wasn't going to happen here and until it does he's simply a chronic underachiever whose potential is diminishing by the day.

It had become very evident over the last few days that contract talks with Nagy were disastrous. Just like last summer, he wants to be paid a whole lot more than he has proven he's worth. Word is that Nagy's camp even after the trade has made it pretty clear that he will still test the free agent marketplace this summer, so trading him to a division rival is largely inconsequential. I am very pleased that we were able to get something while we still can.

Contract talks with Doan are still ongoing, so him being traded is still up in the air. There have reportedly been a couple offers for Curtis Joseph, so he could be moved within the next few days. Gretzky has said that more moves are coming, and I am thrilled that he has finally put the hammer down on the slackers and floaters. It appears as if this franchise is going to finally build a team the right way, and its about time.

A first-rounder for Nagy, now that's nice. Unfortunately, a lot of people have said that this draft is going to be a weak one, but who knows, maybe something will pan out.

That being said, I hope we re-sign Doan...but hey, if we can get a first-rounder for Nagy, what can we get for Doan? Hmmm....

What does it give the Dallas Stars?
To say that Dallas was winning because of their defense is a bit of an understatement. The Stars are sixth in the Western Conference in points, but are ninth in goals for. Not one player on the team is on pace for 65 points. The addition of Nagy brings a whole new dimension to the Dallas game. His 41 points thus far this season is considered poor by his standards but is still enough to take over the scoring lead in Dallas. His intelligence with the puck and goal-scoring acumen should help push Dallas' top six forwards into posting better numbers. Nagy is an underachieving, but very underrated, left winger in desperate need of a change in scenery. He has it now.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes?
It was becoming clear that Nagy was not going to re-sign with the Coyotes. He has not earned his arbitration award from last summer, yet would no doubt be looking for a significant raise on the open market. The Coyotes cleared up some cap space and also acquired a first-round draft pick. Tjarnqvist, already 27, is a checking-line role player perhaps better suited to help the Stars' American League affiliate, as well as provide depth on the third or fourth line when NHL injuries strike.

The rebuilding process continued with the Phoenix Coyotes today, as the club dealt forward Ladislav Nagy to the Dallas Star for winger Mathias Tjarnqvist and a first round pick in the 2007 entry draft.

Nagy, the Coyotes leading scorer this season, is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer and wasn’t expected to re-sign with the club. There were also rumors that he wasn’t getting along with head coach Wayne Gretzky earlier this season.

It was believed the Coyotes would shop Nagy to an Eastern Conference team, but not having anything to lose this season now that their playoff hopes are all but dashed, dealt him to the Stars.

Dallas GM Doug Armstrong had noted earlier this season he wanted to bolster his offensive lines, something that became even more of a necessity once Mike Modano and Eric Lindros were sidelined by injury.

Modano’s returned to action, but obviously Armstrong wants to ensure he’s got enough offensive punch for the upcoming playoffs.

Nagy will likely be a playoff rental for the Stars, although one shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a re-signing if he should become a strong contributor down the stretch and in the playoffs.

The return of Tjarnqvist, an unremarkable checking forward whose bounced between the Stars and the AHL over the past two seasons, isn’t likely to give Coyotes fans much to cheer about. The first round pick should mollify them somewhat, but only if management uses it wisely. The Coyotes record at the draft table has not been a good one.

With Nagy gone, attention will likely focus on the other impending UFA Coyotes of note, winger Shane Doan, who could command far more than Nagy if he’s shopped by deadline day.

The Keith Tkachuk Trade Revisited:
In 2001 Phoenix Received:
C Michal Handzus
LW Ladislav Nagy
C Jeff Taffe
1st Round Pick (Ben Eager)

Handzus (and G Robert Esche) was then used in a trade to get G Brian Boucher and a 3rd round selection (Joe Callahan)

Phoenix Coyotes traded Brian Boucher and Mike Leclerc to the Calgary Flames for Steve Reinprecht and Philippe Sauve.

Philadelphia Flyers traded Mike Comrie to the Phoenix Coyotes for Sean Burke, Branko Radivojevic and the rights to Ben Eager.

Phoenix Coyotes traded Mike Comrie to the Ottawa Senators for Alexei Kaigorodov.

New York Rangers traded Jamie Lundmark to the Phoenix Coyotes for Jeff Taffe

New York Rangers traded Jeff Taffe to the Phoenix Coyotes for Martin Sonnenberg.

Phoenix Coyotes traded Jamie Lundmark to the Calgary Flames for a 4th round selection in 2006 (traded to NYI, C Doug Rogers).

And now, Nagy has been traded to the Dallas Stars for left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist and a first-round draft pick in June.

So the breakdown looks as such:
Coyotes Trade:
LW Keith Tkachuk
G Robert Esche
G Sean Burke
RW Branko Radivojevic
LW Martin Sonenberg

Coyotes Receive:
C Steve Reinprecht
C Jeff Taffe
C Alexei Kaigorodov
LW Mathias Tjarnqvist
D Joe Callahan
Dallas' 1st Round Draft Pick in 2007 (Currently #23 overall, but expected to climb higher as the Stars have been playing better as of late.)

In a nut shell, this does not look good at all. However, Phoenix may be able to pick up some good people in free agency this off season (please not Todd Bertuzzi) with the money that was saved trading away Comrie and Nagy.

Nagy currently has a grand total of three points with Dallas. I really thought he would have gone on a streak after leaving Phoenix.
