I'm not sure what he adds that the current group doesn't already have. Edge and Hightower (at least according to his scouting reports) excel between the tackles but don't have speed to break the long one. That's the definition of what Davenport does. He was Willie Parker's short yardage back and third down back. I'd rather wait to see if someone with some speed gets cut (maybe Chris Henry from the Titans).

After giving Davenport a second thought, I'd be ok with him signing here on one condition: If Shipp and Arrington are both gone. That would allow Hightower to be the primary backup to Edge and Dookie could handle kickoff returns (in Arrington's place) with Breaston and he could be 3rd down back.

Hightower most likely won't be able to be the 3rd down back b/c it's hard for rookies to pick up the blitzes. That would give Dookie a defined role without cutting into Hightower's development. I'd take the trio of Edge/Hightower/Dookie over Edge/Shipp/Arrington any day.

Hightower is a power runner, who will get bigger each year in John Lott's program. Davenport wasn't 250 when he entered the league.

The Cards need a speed back to compliment Edge, Shipp and Hightower...hopefully J.J. is the answer...if not...???

you're right. according to his draft profiles najeh weighed 248lbs when drafted.

But he is half the flake Henry is. Henry is one hot pee-pee test away from a year's suspension. He also returns kicks (bye-bye J.J.). It would be a good signing that we would see dividends from by the end of the year.

but isn't najeh likely one hot poop away from suspension as well?

If the Cards did sign him, wouldn't that create a messy back log at RB?

I would rather have Cedric Benson.
You must really like Shipp type players. No speed, no quickness, no broken tackles.

CB just gives an added dimension of being injury prone and a malcontent who irks teammates.

Too often people dismiss quickness and hole-hitting ability because they dont see it. He looked pretty damn fast in college. The guy had no holes last year. When the team had a little bit of passing game two years ago he looked pretty damn good at running over people IMO.

Benson has been playing in an impossible situation IMO. The team is no threat to pass and faces big time fronts, as well as running behind a horrid line. I dont think he is an all pro, but I do think he would be a big upgrade over Shipp.

The overwhelming majority of Bearfans disagree with your assessment of Benson but they might agree with your assessment of the line and the passing game. The guy could not make anyone miss and liked to dance before hitting the line.

Lots of rookies who come from teams (college) that provided holes struggle when they arrive at one that doesn't. Forgive me, but I am just not willing to give up on the 4th overall pick from two years ago enough to say that Marcell Shipp is the superior player. Ain't gonna happen. We can agree to disagree here.

I am not saying Shipp is the better player. If Benson didn't have an attitude problem and a drinking problem (DUI on boat and in car within a month or so), I might be right there with you.

Benson was drafted in 2005. That gives me three years of watching him here in Chicago. No thanks.

4th overall pick from 3 years ago, I think. This will be his 4th NFL season.

It's hard to disagree that he could/would be worse than Marcel Shipp, who has been terrible ever since he signed his first contract extension. But it can't be overstated how much his former teammates hated Benson. A departed offensive lineman this offseason had to dispute the point that his own teammates tried to injure him during training camp. Scary situation. Benson wasn't even among the top 5 #2 backs when he was playing against defenses worn down by Thomas Jones. Add that to his attitude problem and that he's probably facing an NFL suspension, and I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team.

And I'm saying this as a guy who would welcome talents like Adam Jones, Terrell Owens, and Chad Johnson to the Cards' roster.

Where did you get this from. I never heard of his teammates despising that much. Just that they liked the former Cardinal malcontent(hmm), Thomas Jones much better.

I heard a bit of that the couple years in Chicago.

BAH!

Thomas Jones seem to return to form last year for the Jets. I guess he had flashbacks from having to run behind Anthony Clement again.

I heard on Bob Kemp's show maybe a month ago that someone spoke to a former Bears OL (Fred Miller?) about it, and his reply that intentionally trying to injure a teammate was ridiculous, and that "no one does that anymore."

I'm sorry, it was Jay Glazer based on interviews with "about ten" of the Chicago Bears starters. Check it out: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...-defense-does-not-endorse-Cedri?urn=nfl,87187

Olin Kreutz busted a teammate's eye socket a couple years ago. :)

 Jones had the 3rd highest rushing total of his career (1100+ yards) last season. He only scored 1 TD, but he was playing on a pretty terrible offense with an offensive line that was maybe worse than what he even had in Arizona.

Jones only had about 150 fewer rushing yards than Edgerrin James, though he had to share the rock with Leon Washington.
