Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the San Francisco 49ers have signed cornerback Nate Clements.

It's a mind-boggling eight-year, $80 million deal, with $22 million in guaranteed money, and it makes Clements the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Clements was expected to be pursued by several teams. But he never got out of San Fran.

Holy crap. Not good for us though, but I doubt that they're going to sign Adalius Thomas too.

Take it for what its worth but alot of Bills fans on KFFL thought Clements picked up his play in his contract year and cruised the years before that.

I bet this puts them out of the running for Thomas though.

Now before anyone goes ape over the total price of the deal and the amount of gauranteed money, we need to know the exact detials of it first.

22 in gauranteed could mean 10 Mill signing bonus and 12 Mill in rosters bonuses sprinkled in towards the end of the deal. Same goes for amount of Base salary will most likely be huge towards the end of the deal.

What the media reports is usually mind blowing until you actually break down the deal. I can pretty much bet that Clements will never even see a third of that total of 80 Mill, and thats being conservative.

Dont be fooled by the totals the media gives out, its all in the details.

I am all for signing quality players but that is crazy.

The NFL is headed for big trouble.

I have a hard time critisizing a team for identifing and addressing one of their biggest needs by signing the best available player at that position on the first day of free agency. It is about winning championships not saving money and they had 40 mil to work with.

I agree 100%

you cant just overspend for everyone. But if you got 30-40 mill then you can take a chance on a guy easily...

"The highest paid Defensive player? He's not worth it the contract he signed IMO."

He is only the highest paid defensive player if he plays out the whole contract which most players don't. This is the numbers game that the Cardinals don't play.

As far as Clements not being worth it...if they win the wide open NFC West it is. Come on, they addressed one of their 3 biggest needs with the best player at that position who improves the area that we dominate them. This is a huge signing by the 49ers and it effects us the most. We have been able to trot our wideouts out and own them and now they have made a huge move inaddressing that.

I don't hate that we didn't go after him but to say that he is not worth it is a bit rediculous when they finish ahead of us again next year. Oh and they are athletes, none of them are worth what they get paid.

The 49ers can have the March headlines. I want the ones that come in January.

Frankly, I'm tired of March and April headlines.

The 49ers have signed safety Michael Lewis from Philadelphia Eagles. He is a big hitter who was benched in 2006. But he has starting experience and he's only 26 years old. 107 tackles in 2005. Clements & Lewis are a great 1-2 punch for 49ers, both good tacklers who had over 100 tackles each in 2005.

year-team-tackles

2002 Philadelphia Eagles - 49
2003 Philadelphia Eagles- 85
2004 Philadelphia Eagles- 88
2005 Philadelphia Eagles- 107
2006 Philadelphia Eagles - 57

Safety Michael Lewis gets big money from the 49ers

NINERS SPENDING LIKE DRUNKEN SAILORS

There are reports that the 49ers' deal with free agent safety Michael Lewis includes $10 million in guaranteed money. That's an incredible bonus for a player who lost his starting job to Sean Considine after getting burned in Week 6 by Saints WR Joe Horn for a touchdown. New Orleans ultimately won that game.

Lewis played in 14 games in 2006 for the Eagles and finished with 43 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions -- one, an 84-yard return for a TD in a Week 14 game against the Redskins. Lewis had nine passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Not many NFL teams had Lewis among the top-tier free agents, but it's clear the 49ers were intent on upgrading their secondary and they've committed over $30 million in guaranteed money to make that happen.

I wish everyone else would see things this way.
