For those who don't want to wait for K9, or want to compare two different sets of eyes.

Nate Potter replaces D'Anthony Batiste with 14:53 remaining in the 2nd Q. Our first drive of the quarter. I wonder if this was planned, because Batiste was not his usual terrible self in the first quarter. I will go by plays in each drive. PP are pass plays, RP are run plays. I will only give notes on pass plays.

1- PP: Nate Potter gets bull rushed by Clay Matthews, recovers, rides Matthews around Skelton. Great protection by the unit, Colledge blocks nobody.

2- RP

3- RP

###

1- RP

2- PP: Nate Potter vs. Clay Matthews in a wide set, good slide, good protection

3- PP: Nate Potter initially picks up DE , but pases the DE off inside to pick up the blitzing LBer. Unfortunately, Daryn Colledge doubles down with Lyle Sendlein on the DT. Colledge needs to see the blitzing backer.

###

1- PP: Potter vs Matthews, good protection

2- PP: Potter bs Matthews, gets beat, good recovery to decent protection

3- RP

4- PP: Potter picks up stunting DE

5- PP: Potter beat on inside move vs Matthews, recovers, but Colledge can't; slide to pick up looping DE due to Potter and Matthews. Potter probably gave up too much separation in his set.

6- PP: Potter sets hard inside as he has help from back, good protection.

7- PP: Potter good protection, 3 man rush

8- PP: Potter vs. Matthews, gets help, good protection

###

1- RP

2- PP: Nate Potter blocks down and Ohrnberger pulls left to pick up Matthews. Good protection.

3- PP: Potter and Colledge handle DL stunt, good protection.

###

1- PP: Potter vs. Matthews, good protection

2- PP: Potter steps in the bucket vs. Matthews and gives up inside pressure.

3- PP: Potter w/ good protection (Clay Matthews leaves before this play)

4- PP: Potter holds vs. bull rush. I think Ohrnberger gives up pressure from looping OLB on right side.

5- PP: Potter with good protection

6- PP: Potter drops his hands which allows edge pressure and the ball to get hit while Skelton is throwing it.

7- RP

8- PP: Potter with good protection, Colledge gets manhandled here w/ a bull rush (This is where I started jotting down how often he was getting beat)

###

1- RP

2- PP: Potter gets beat around edge due to weak set, but recovers to light pressure. Colledge gets pushed back again into pocket.

3- PP: Potter with good protection. Ohrnberger gets pushed into pocket here.

4- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

5- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

6- PP: Potter with good protection, Sendlein is late to see blitzing backer and RB gets crushed in pass pro

7- PP: Potter with good protection, Massie/Ohrnberger get beat by stunt

8- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

9- RP

###

1- RP

2- PP: Potter with good protection, Colledge gets pushed back again

3- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

###

1- PP: Potter w/ mental lapse here and is slow on get off, allows edge pressure and sack.

2- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

3- PP: An awful screen pass away from Potter

###

1- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

2- PP: Potter w/ clean pickup of inside stunt with Colledge

3- PP: Potter gets popped w/ bull rush, recovers and provides good protection

4- PP: Potter gives up edge rush, recovers and provides good protection

5- PP: Potter with good protection, good blocking all around

6- PP: Potter with good protection, Ohrnberger beat

7- RP

8- PP: Potter with good protection, Colledge gets abused again

There it is guys. With my eyes, I saw a young athletic OT with developing technique and plus feet. I saw him handle a bull rushes, speed rushes, and several stunts. He had one bad get off which cost him a sack and gave up two inside moves which he needs to improve on. His feet allow him to recover if he gets beat, and it will be better once he improves his base strength which
does still need improvement. I would have liked to see him vs. Matthews for the final quarter, but I thought he handled himself very well for being on the road vs. one of the better pass rush teams in the league. He is far from a finished project, but he seems to have the athleticism to compete on a weekly basis ande if he continues to develop, who knows.

love it. Forgot to hit post earlier lol. I would love for this kid to be at least a real, serviceable backup at the least. If he can be a solid starter, I will be ecstatic

Kelemete needs to be put in at guard now too, like yesterday. Colledge has been complete crap and Senio in a few games will surpass him and Snyder....and it does not mean that Kelemente would be great right now but our veteran guards are pathetic.

I thought Colledge > Snyder. Maybe even give Batiste a crack at G, I know he sucked at LT, but he's never played the position either... It's all worth a shot at this point IMO

Really nice work-up Chopper. Potter's, (actually our OT's), play was the bright point of the game for me today. I wish I could say the same for the interior line play. It was nice to see Skelton finally have some time to throw the ball.

What really hurt our passing game more than anything today were the drops by Ducette and Housler. Those drops, combined with the (non challenge by Whiz on the bad spot), combined to take the air out of our balloon today in my opinion.

Thanks loads for the work-up on Potter. I hope we will see much more of him after this, (and maybe a look at Kelemete too). I still believe that this draft of pass blocking linemen by Keim, is the biggest plus we have seen in a draft since Whiz has been here. Yes, it will take time for them to grow and gain experience and confidence. Yes, they will get stronger with more time under Lott. Ii is normal for a college kid to need about three years to get starter ready in the pros. I loved that Potter showed the footwork and the quickness to play the position today. These kids may be ready during the next year if given some experience now, (during the down cycle of this year). As of today, Massie and Potter have both shown more inclination of being our future OT's than any other tackle on this team since Whiz and Grimm have been here. As you said, Batiste also had a decent turn today prior to being lifted for Potter. With Levi due back next year, and a decent draft upcoming for O-Linemen, we could have some serious competition on the line for next year. We need it badly, because this entire line has been as complacent, and as unconcerned as Grimm has since he has been here.

I really hope Whiz divests himself of Grimm, (or if not, then he is forced by the FO/Ownership of doing so this off season). I am not ready to call for Whiz to be dumped just yet, because he has shown periods of being that head coach we hoped for when he arrived. I do believe that he must revamp his offense, OC AND OL coach in order to get this offense going. I would really like to see Kolb handle this offense with the OT's playing like they did today. That could make a huge boost to this offense and the team as a whole. Lord knows the defense is getting worn down from carrying 95% of the load so far this year. They could use some time off, AND an offense that could actually help them after the bye week.

Thanks once more for the workup on Potter, and the assessment of our interior line during today's play. I have been high on the draft by Keim this year, and this helps to confirm that my belief was not misplaced. I hope we see as much promise from Kelemete, (soon), as we have seen from Massie and Potter so far. This could be the start of something real good for our offense.

The best thing about NFL replay is that it can train you to watch the play away from the ball so that you see things as they're happening.

I know that it's hard when the backs are this bad, but I'm going to go back later this week and check out the run plays that you kind of gloss over. I'm less concerned with Potter in pass pro than I am with him as a run blocker. I'd guess that the reason that Batiste was still playing this deep into the season is that the staff doesn't have a lot of faith in Potter setting the edge in the run game.

I'm largely with you; I was really impressed with Potter's ability in pass pro. I think he looked really shaky against the bull rush--which is one reason I expect him to try and get bigger and stronger in the offseason. I'd like to watch that play where Ohrnberger slipped outside to block Clay Matthews. When I saw it happen during the game, I was dumbstruck that is somehow a design.

Whatever the blocking system that we use is in pass pro, the system itself struggles with passing along stunts. I don't watch as much of the rest of the NFL as I used to, but it seems like teams run stunts against us more often than I see in other games.

That jibes with my impression watching the game. I basically watched potter every play and came away with him as my bright spot of the game.

Great post.

In regards to the run blocking, I did gloss over it because it is so hard to evaluate at the pro level. The one area where the Cards struggle is getting to the 2nd level which is why LBers shoot gaps and hit our guys in the backfield so much. Our players struggle with double team blocks and are unable to slide off to cut off pursuit. Just with recall from the re-watch, Potter looked ok in run blocking, though it's hard to remember specifically.

The Ohrnberger play made me do an instant rewind during the game. I was shocked because Matthews is very fast, and pulling the RG across the line to pick up the left side edge rusher is quite a gamble, but it worked. It is worth a second look.

As far as passing stunts, I think it is due to a mix of poor spacing and poor base strength. The idea to stop/pass a stunt between the OT & OG is to prevent B gap penetration using base strength, then pinch together to facilitate the transfer when the stunt occurs, and the slide apart to pick up the defensive players. Where I see us having problems is Colledge is usually overwhelmed physically where he can't pass off the DT and then seperate & lside to get the DE OR the OT gets beat hard inside which cuts off the OG.

If you don't mind, i would like to get your opinion on Daryn Colledge in this game. I saw him play a terrible game, but I have never really liked him as a player and would like to get your thoughts. IMO, he was the worst player on the line, but I am a bit biased.

I was very big on Kelemente out of college, and I think he has a ton of potential, but I am not sure it is a given to just throw him in at OG. I would liek to see it, but I wonder if that might be too many inexperienced linemen on the field at once.

If he was inserted, I would prefer to see him at LG as he has continuity with Potter already. Move Colledge to the RG spot.
