Report: NBA disciplined six refs for violating anti-gambling rules

In the wake of the Tim Donaghy betting scandal, the NBA has disciplined six referees for violating it's anti-gambling rules, according to a published report.

Sources told The New York Daily News that the six officials, whose names have not been identified, were found in violation of the league's anti-gambling policy for such infractions as going to casinos. The information came to light as a result of the NBA's investigation into its officials after the Donaghy scandal broke this summer. But the sources said these new infractions were in no way close to what Donaghy did.

"Nobody's getting suspended," the source told the paper. "They were reprimanded and punished, but nobody lost their job."

The league would not elaborate on the infractions, but NBA Commissioner David Stern did comment while in Europe at NBA preseason camps.

"There were some violations," Stern told The New York Daily News, referring to the six. "But they are not hanging crimes."

On July 24, Stern blamed a "rogue, isolated criminal" for the Donaghy scandal.

Donaghy, who pleaded guilty to two felony charges after admitting to betting on games he officiated, will be sentenced on Jan. 25 before Judge Carol B. Amon, the Philadelphia Daily News reported, citing sealed court documents filed in Brooklyn (N.Y.) Federal Court.

The 40-year-old veteran official pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to transmit gambling information across state lines -- for taking cash payoffs from gamblers and betting on games he officiated. He has been free on $250,000 bond.

In a letter to Stern, Donaghy resigned on July 9.

Court papers say Donaghy started placing bets on NBA games in 2003. He then gave gamblers inside information, including tips on which crews would officiate games and how the various officials and players interacted.

Donaghy faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. He also must pay a $500,000 fine.

This is very hard for me to swallow. The last paragraph especially makes me skeptical.

Is it wrong to wish for Stern to be forced to resign when more evidence is revealed...? Does that make me a bad person?

No, it makes you an NBA fan who respects the integrity of the game.

6 really isn't all that many

i also don't think this implicates anyone else - different refs call different styles of games and being a ref will carry a level of personal approach with the players as well - you don't think there are some guys that do better than others with a rasheed wallace?!

knowing this could help the gamblers if the line was looking favorable - so & so is working the pistons game and he is oil and water with sheed, expect him to pick up at least 1 tech

6 is A LOT more than the "isolated incident" that Stern mentioned at his press conference.

None of the 6 have been accused of mob ties or been associated with letting their gambling affect their calls. 6 refs playing the slots in vegas and 1 ref fixing games for the mob is still an isolated incident in my eyes.

We don't exactly know what these other 6 refs have or have not done yet.

Correct, but to assume they were part of the isolated incident is worse than assuming they were just gambling

The league on Sunday denied that these 6 guys are in trouble for gambling FWIW.
