The NBA salary CAP goes down. See AP article on ESPN dated 7-8-09.

The figure the league announced Tuesday night was about $1 million less than last season's cap of $58.68 million, even though league-wide revenue rose 2.5 percent. The number is expected to drop further next season when the full effect of the economic difficulties hits.

Who wants to crunch some numbers?!!?

-Suns current salary (including Nash's option this year, and Pavlovic/Wallace contract, and rookies)
-Suns current salary (not including Nash's salary, but including Pavlovic/Wallace contract, and rookies)
-Suns potential salary (assuming a Wallace for T.Chandler trade and buyout of Pavlovic (was it like 1.4M or something?))
-Suns potential salary (assuming Amare for Biedrins/Azibuike/Bellinelli/B.Wright)

That means luxury tax threshold will be lower as well. Can't wait for all this Suns flexibility when we just let guys walk.

Press Release

The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

The new Salary Cap and tax level go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 8, when the league’s “moratorium period” ends and teams can begin signing free agents and making trades.

The mid-level exception is $5.854 million for the 2009-10 season and the minimum team salary, which is set at 75% of the Salary Cap, is $43.275 million.

$76,674,627 but this is very unlikely since the Suns are almost certain to buy-out at least Pavlovic.
-Suns current salary (not including Nash's salary, but including Pavlovic/Wallace contract, and rookies)
$63,549,627
-Suns potential salary (assuming a Wallace for T.Chandler trade and buyout of Pavlovic (was it like 1.4M or something?))
$72,174,627 (including Nash, Clark, Chandler, Devin Brown, and $1.5M Pavlovic buyout)
-Suns potential salary (assuming Amare for Biedrins/Azibuike/Bellinelli/B.Wright)
I won't bother with this one. Without Curry or Randolph included that would be a horrible trade, and I hope very unlikely.

Now here's our projected salary assuming that we buy-out Wallace ourselves for about half of what he's owed and keep Nash:

$66,224,627

Obviously since that would leave only 10 men on the roster, the Suns would still have to sign at least three more players.

Note: none of the above numbers account for Grant Hill or Taylor Griffin.

Every team will be feeling the pinch on this one, not just the Suns. It will have a significant impact on free agency not only this year but next year as well. Could be some real bargains out there if the Suns are patient and don't do anything stupid (ie re-sign Nash to a ridiculous extension or do the Chandler deal).

I heard an analysis of this on ESPN radio, and they contend the free agents this year will be more valuable than the 2010 crop, because of the cap and luxury tax going down, it means all those 2010 free agents will likely stay put with their current teams. Don't kill me for this, I am just relaying what ESPN radio said.
