Paying Marion $15m doesn't look so bad when you look at some of the guys above him, like Houston, Grant, Finley, Webber, Hill, Rose and Jones. They make Marion's salary look pretty reasonable.

This argument always bothers me. You'll note that none of the teams paying those players are anywhere near championship contenders, with the exception of the Mavericks (who are paying Finley).

Unless your owner has infinite money, you can't afford bad contracts. Sure, there are contracts worse than Marion's, but look how the corresponding teams have suffered.

In fact there are only three players in the entire league who make more than Marion and are on contending teams: O'Neal, Duncan, and Finley (who is a special case); Nowitzki makes the same amount, save a few pennies.

Bad contracts are terrible burdens if you're trying to build an elite team.

Well look at it another way then. According to the list Marion is the 20th highest player in the league. And while Marion may not necessarily be one of the NBA's top 20 players one could certainly make the argument that he is. I'm not someone who ranks players 1-100 but I'd say 20th best is in the right ballpark for Marion given all the things he brings to the table. Because of this I don't see Marion's as a bad contract.

This is old hat anyway. Suns fans have been arguing about whether Marion is overpaid for years. Sorry I brought it up...

That list is the strongest argument that you should not overpay players - almost none of them are worth their contracts and most are nowhere close to their contracts. Kobe, Duncan, Dirk, Shawn and Elton are the only ones I'd say that are worth almost what they're paid.

Contract worse than Marions? Wasnt aware Marions contract was bad. Seems worth the money to me easily. He's a allstar and highly productive....plays both sides of the ball too.

Lets just hope we get our money worth out of Amare.

a lot of those players were given big salaries becuase at one time they either wer eplaying very well, or had some good potential to be good for a long time. Most of them suprisingly have some sort of injury to their leg that changed that......

The future's not that near. Stoudemire makes "only" $12 million this season, and his salary doesn't pass Marion's current level until 2009-10. That $3 million difference makes a big difference in his position in the rankings.
