NBA TV at Suns Training camp today

NBA has Real Training Camp where they visit every team during training camp/preseason. Today at 2pm and 7pm ET they will be at the Suns.

Here's what I saw last night on NBA TV. First, they showed about 10 minutes of each camp, I saw the Nuggets, Nets and Suns. The head coaches were miked. First up-Nuggets--George Karl is trying to teach....stops the action a lot and teaches, a lot like I remember high school ball being......he wasn't the happiest, friendliest coach ever either.....

Then, the Nets...they were doing 5-on-5 drills with 3 groups of 5, rotating a new group in after each possession or two. Lawrence Frank looked like he was abot 5'4" and seemed like just a little kid out there, wonder if there's some sort of 'I can't believe this little dude is my coach' thought going through the heads of the players. He didn't stop the action too much, just kind of threw in comments during the action....

Then, D'Antoni and the Suns....5-on-5, up and down the court. Mike D is continually saying, "push it, get a shot, good, nice..." just throwing out sets and keeping things moving. He really seemed to focus on Leandro, I bet he said, "nice LB" or "good job LB" 25 times, really seemed to be trying to build him up....

My take on the 3 teams is this: If I were a professional bball player, I'd want to be on the Suns. I wouldn't need to be yelled at by GK in Denver, I wouldn't want to be coached by a guy that might not seem to have a lot of 'clout' in NJ. Mike D is professional, easy going yet on task. The 10 minutes of Suns action seemed to me like I'd think an NBA practice would be....

It was very cool to watch, I'll be sure to check it out some more. It's neat to see the different coaching philosophies and what some teams need that others don't.

one thing that i saw that i was a little surprized with was that how well brain grant moved in the clip. he drove around one defender and had one brake away lapup on a fast brake.

I have to agree though. The Suns were out running and having the guys just run the offense and taking open shots. They were actually practicing playing basketball.

The others I have seen were doing a lot of regimented drills and talking/teaching.

It bothers me that the Suns appear to be a jump shooting team now without Amare but I think they will blitz a lot of teams in the regular season.
The Suns will have to find way to get inside and get to the FT line to be really successful.

funny, when i watched the nuggets i saw a tough, yet energetic and out-going george karl. joking with all the players, being optimistic and encouraging. sure he tought and helped the team improve but he was having a ball...and so was the team. everyone was laughing with him. id love to play in that environment.

I think the difference of opinion on Denver/Karl comes from whether you watched the whole show (about 2 hours per team) or just one of the 30 minute recaps. I've been Tivoing several hours every day just to be sure I get the whole show as my Directv guide only lists the recaps shows. Thursday, for example, the Suns were covered from 11 AM till just after 1 PM (Pacific Time) although a classic NBA game was listed for that time slot.

They spent just over two hours with the Suns and for the most part it didn't look much different than every other workout they've shown so far (Phoenix was the 8th or 9th camp but all 30 are scheduled this month).

Although there wasn't much posting up, we went to the hoop much the same as we do when Amare is out there(minus the power and explosion obviously). Diaw had a couple of nice drive and dunk plays but it was hard to follow with all the new guys out there. It's amazing to see so many unrecognizable faces and without uniforms it takes a while to match names and games. Although I heard otherwise, I thought Brian Grant moved fairly well and no more than a half step behind the Grant of a few years ago, IMO.

One thing that has been consistent through almost every team's camp and the several preseason games I've watched so far; they are all talking about forcing the break as often as possible. Several teams worked on it following both makes and misses and I think we're going to see a much faster league this season. The bad side of that is we will probably lose a bit of the advantage we held last year.

BTW, I am very impressed with the Rockets and I really believe the Spurs might not even be the best team in Texas this year. I haven't seen Miami yet but so far Houston looks to be a pretty good Vegas bet for those of you that are just looking for a place to park some cash for 9 months.

I've seen NAsh, Barbosa, Bell, and Diaw make nice moves to the rim in the scrimmage footage. Once Diaw gets to the free throw line we have separate concerns of course. I believe you might add Jones to that list but I'd have to rewatch the game... obviously that's only one game but here's hoping there's a trend in there
