COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley didn't hide the fact the Gamecocks deserved to be the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament.
UCLA was the choice on Sunday. The Bruins beat the Gamecocks (30-3) by a score of 77-62 in Los Angeles on Nov. 24.
The Gamecocks are next in line and one of the four No. 1 seeds. South Carolina will host No. 16 seed Tennessee Tech on Friday in Colonial Life Arena.
NCAA tournament committee chair Derita Dawkins said there were two key factors that went in to giving UCLA the nod over South Carolina.
"One was the head to head match up," Dawkins told ESPN. "The other was one of our criteria which is competitive in losses and South Carolina suffered a 29-point loss to UConn so those are the two key differences in those resumes."
After the loss to UCLA, the Gamecocks didn't lose again this season until Feb. 9 at Texas by four points.
DAWN'S THOUGHTS: Dawn Staley has a question after UCLA tops South Carolina for No. 1 overall seed
Dawkins' reference to UConn was the Huskies' 87-58 win on Feb. 16 which snapped a 71-game long win streak in Colonial Life Arena.
It was the last loss for the Gamecocks this season but clearly the two setbacks were critical factors in deciding who was the overall No. 1 seed according to the committee. The Bruins (30-2) have lost twice this season to Southern Cal, also a No. 1 seed.
