Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule talked with the media earlier this week and noted how bad he felt for Washington punter Jack McCallister.
McCallister transferred to the Nebraska football program in January. He did so before it was announced that Mike Ekeler would be hired as special teams coordinator. This resulted in a change in philosophy on special teams, something Rhule discussed earlier this week.
Both the head coach and Ekeler met with McCallister and advised him to go elsewhere, as noted in a report from Husker247’s Michael Bruntz. He also expanded on his comments further.
"This is an amazing young man, who committed to us and had the team mentality to stay with Washington through their bowl game and then came to us. As we made a coaching change, there's always collateral damage. Coach Ekeler has done a wonderful job and strongly, strongly believes in utilizing the college rules, which are different than the NFL rules where guys can get down the field, so we will be more of a rugby punt team."
McCallister will remain with the program through the end of spring practice. It will be interesting to see how the rugby-style punting will impact the Husker special teams unit. At the very least, it is clear that Eckler is putting his stamp on the special teams unit and has a plan for how things will go moving forward.
