NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets have not had the services of D'Angelo Russell, Cam Johnson, or Day'Ron Sharpe for the past few games with the veteran trio dealing with injuries. As Brooklyn has just three games left on their 2024-25 NBA schedule, there's still a question of whether any of those players will take the floor again and head coach Jordi Fernandez pushed the answer to that question for another day.
"We're not going to see them today, they're not able to play," Fernandez said prior to Thursday's game against the Atlanta Hawks when asked if Russell, Johnson, or Sharpe will play again this season. Thursday's game against the Hawks is the third-to-last game of the season for the Nets and with the season finale being on Sunday against the New York Knicks, it seems like time is running out for those guys to get back to playing.
"I just made sure and asked them and CJ (Johnson) is pretty sore. Same way (with) all three guys, they're not able to play," Fernandez continued. What makes Fernandez's comments about the trio interesting is that the team has not ruled out any of the players for the rest of the season despite Russell dealing with a right ankle sprain, Johnson nursing a lower back contusion, and Sharpe working his way back from a right knee sprain.
At the moment, it seems like none of the three aforementioned players will play again this season, but until Brooklyn officially rules them out for the rest of the campaign, the question regarding their respective availabilities will remain unanswered. Heading into Thursday's game against Atlanta, Brooklyn will still have Keon Johnson, Ziaire Williams, and Nic Claxton available to go against Trae Young and company.
Following Thursday's matchup with the Hawks, the Nets go back on the road for the last time this season for a matchup at the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. Then, Brooklyn will get a day off before facing the Knicks at home on Sunday in the finale to a season that had its ups and downs, but will end with the franchise getting a good look at what the team has on the roster heading into an important offseason.
