A gamble no matter what after that injury. No way to be certain. I wouldn’t take him with our first pick.
Read a couple articles that say that even though full recovery can take 6 to 12 months just over 80% of athletes return to their prior form completely.
So it's a gamble but not a huge one. Your basically gambling on the players work ethic. Because that seems to be the deciding factor in full recovery. The new oline coach should have a good feel for that.
With us having 3 RT's ahead of him...I would just start him on IR designated, leave him there until November first, then work him in slowly. We technically shouldn't "need" him this season unless things go horribly bad.....

So we can afford to have our first round pick not contributing this year? Not something I would do at the 16th pick.

Can afford - Yes.

Should afford - No.

But what I like is that we are not forced to do it and counting on a rookie to be ready on day 1.

I think the obvious choices are Edge, DT and OL at #16. An Edge would jump right in a package. A DT would jump into a rotation. For both cases, it could be in the 1st string and be okay if it's only 2nd string.

If an OT, It allows him to start at G and then sliding out to OT next season.

Not saying you're wrong, but it will depend on what the doctors say. And with all the FB injuries in the NFL, you are definitely right about the CERTAIN part.

I'm beginning to think that they will go edge rusher with their pick and go for an OL on Day 2. Their 30 player visits were filled with edger rushers. Of course that doesn't mean anything but there will be some good ERs at 16. Just a hunch.

This is exactly where I am, the possibility of not contributing combined with the injury risk when we can get a contributor in the front 7 with our pick doesn’t make sense to me.

If the Cards are looking for day 1 starters with the 1st pick, then Jihaad Campbell or Golden should be the pick.
I'm really liking Campbell depending on how serious the shoulder injury is.
A round 1-2 punch of Campbell and Donovan Jackson could give the Cards 2 starters from day 1 of the season.

i suppose you could take, yet again, a ILB in the mid first round. But that player better be a really good pro from the jump.

would love Donovan Jackson at 47

Pearce, Grant, Nolen, could all be day one starters... Truth is, if we go OLB, DT, OG in rounds 1,2,3...we can get three immediate starters...
then you start getting into the quibbling about what snap count makes one a starter....defensive guys up front do not usually play all the snaps like a safety or an olineman

ESPN thoughts on DTs

I’m surprised if this is new thinking. My thought was always invest in the best qb disruptor. And the shortest path to the qb is a straight line. DT. So while edge has been sexy, DT has always been the fulcrum of a dominant defense. The outside guys for the 80s bears and 80-90s giants got the flash, but the inside guys were crucial to the disruption that made the edges stars (though LT would’ve been a star regardless).

lol. But I kinda agree with him. I hate that it would be the fourth mlb we would take in the first round, but shockingly it’s still a need. I’m feeling my old mlb draft bias starting to resurface…
Thing is, ...if he turns into Ray Lewis sans homicide nobody will care when we drafted him.

I think Campbell is different than the others because he has shown pass rushing skills and went to Bama as an edge rusher.
I also think of past Bama ILB's that I liked and turned out to be meh, like Rolondo McClain. But those guys were also purer ILB's.
I think Campbell can be a guy that plays the run well and then could move out to edge and rush the passer or provide a gap seeking inside pass rush.

My thing, when it comes to the draft, if you can get a guy who is much more highly rated than the next guy, I'd take him. Look at the DT's. After Graham, you can make an argument for about 10-15 guys as the next best and who might be the best in the NFL. We've all talked Nolen, Harmon, Grant, Tyliek Williams, etc. as to who would be best. The kid from Toledo might be as good as any
For the edge, after Carter, it's the same. Pearce, Stewart, the BC kid, Walker, Green, Williams, et al, when the kid from Louisville may turn out the best.

No doubt, Edge and DT, are the more premium positions but if you can get a similar guy in round 2 while getting the lead at another position in round 1, that makes sense to me.

But who knows, maybe I just have pre-draft brain cloud overload.

Disagree on Pearce. At the start of last season he was being hyped as a top 5 pick this year. But then he had a mediocre season and Carter played well enough to garner the attention. But Pearce is only 21 and his best football is still in front of him.
The only knock on him is semi short arms

I hear what you are saying, but I just don't think the Cardinals can afford to take him. I don't see Campbell as a prospect who is significantly higher rated than Harmon, Grant, Nolen, Green, Carter, or Williams/Stewart. I think he is just another guy in that cloud of players. Add in the issue with his 5th year option and he becomes more of a risk than less IMO.

Campbell’s ability to rush from the outside is significant. He only moved inside because he had the ability to do it. He might struggle more in the middle in the NFL but his versatility is quite valuable. I wouldn’t be disappointed if they moved down and took him. Of course he could well be gone. Personally I just think taking him at 16 is a reach. He’s not a proven upper level rusher so it’s a bit of a gamble.

Buddy, Pearce's issues are that the coaches hated him. Uncoachable is a rare label to get, and yet Pearce has it. They didn't play him on run downs because he wouldn't play within the scheme. In college, he was a total "me" guy. Obviously that can change, but he is risky.

this draft needs to happen man - can't read many more of these over analyzed darksided poop smears detailing the pocket change we have left even tho monti spent more than ever before - and just stop with how the whole first year was bad - come on man - weak brownies - monti's vision didn't start till year two - if you mention the effects of the josh dobbs era without mentioning it was the josh dobbs era - gtfoh

week to go - some fans have actual hope for this season but it's festivus for the rest of us

and to you koolaid drankin' always fansplainin' how this club can do no wrong... when will this foolish well of hopetimism runnith dry? do we not live in a desert? should've dried up decades ago yet you run around with your head in a bird's chest talking about everything is for the betterment of some grand design that's never come together in the history of this franchise

i think im a half breed - im kinda on both sides - half koolaid half darksided aka koolside - the koolside definitely reps the majority of asfn but everything changes with a bunch of wins... or losses
