Brooklyn Nets forward Ziaire Williams has been having his best month of the season throughout March as it seems like he is finally putting together the consistent long-range shooting with his disruptive perimeter defense. Williams is coming off one of his best games of the season and prior to his explosion, head coach Jordi Fernandez had plenty of praise for Williams.
"He's (Williams) done a great job. He's been spot on, starting with this defensive presence and taking the challenge to guard the best player on the other team pretty much every night," Fernandez said of Williams prior to Thursday's 105-99 overtime loss at the Indiana Pacers. Williams went on to put up 22 points, five rebounds, and two steals in the kind of game that showed how much he has improved since the beginning of this season.
"All those catch-and-shoots and how efficient he's been, getting to the free throw line, making his free-throws," Fernandez continued. "I remember in Milwaukee, he made big free-throws at the end for us to win that game. So, he's been a big part of what we've done so far."
As Fernandez alluded to, Williams has been tasked with guarding the opposing team's best perimeter player while being asked to spread the floor with his shooting so that the Nets can run their offense effectively. Unfortunately. Williams will not be playing in the rematch at the Pacers on Saturday as the team is being cautious with his right hamstring tightness so that he can get back on the floor when he's ready.
"I'm just taking what the defense gives me. I'm not making it complicated," Williams said following his performance on Thursday at the Pacers. "I got a great point guard in D'Lo feeding me the rock and other guys looking for me, everyone giving me confidence. When you got the whole team yelling at you every time you don't shoot the ball, it definitely helps. It definitely is a team and collective effort."
