From a pure coaching and teaching aspect, how will a new coach make this team better?
As long as the new coach / GM know how to put together a decent OL, the difference would be night and day... and oh, some decent playcalling wouldn't hurt either...

You mean they don't?

Seriously, I would love to see how DG's oline blocking schemes differ from Loneys. Essentially you are saying Green approached Loney, said you can be oline coach but you can't teach them anything other than the way I decided to do it. Hmmmm and Loney, being of sound mind and having the reputation of being a very good Oline coach, said "Sure"

I dont buy that. I do buy that Big should be moved to guard. Wells should be depth, Ross should be cut, Step should be cut, Brown should be kept for depth and we make a trade for a proven LT and/or RT. Otherwise we are looking at essentially 2 off seasona of acquiring better talent to make this line better. To me it all comes down to talent and I dont think we have that on the line.

If it is all DG's scheme then what about the other 8+ years of sheer ineptitude?

If you read what Wylie said that's essentially why he got fired. He said he took the job and then he and Green did not see eye to eye on what blocking schemes should be used. Last year we were told that NFL insiders said the Cards used an "outdated" blocking scheme, we all blamed Lindsay but I pointed out then it's probably why Wylie and Green didn't see eye to eye, Wylie knew that scheme wasn't going to work.

Loney wasn't actually fired by the Vikings he quit when they hired Childress and he assumed he wasn't going to be able to stay as both OC and OL coach there. So he left and took our job. I'm assuming he figured leaving before he got fired was better for the resume. I doubt Green told him you have no say in anything but I do recall one of the first reports in training camp we got from Hardy Brown he was asked about the difference between our blocking scheme and Denver's. The answer was something like we don't use a true Denver zone blocking scheme, we're using more of a "power zone blocking" scheme that Coach Green likes.

Last year several times during games, Ron Wolfley said on radio that one of reasons our run game stunk so badly was it looked like 3 guys were zone blocking, and 2 were not. He said that Lindsay and OC Keith Rowen(who also coached OL at some point in his career) were trying to put in a "power zone blocking" scheme that Green liked. Maybe Wolfley and hardy just assumed in both instances that system was Green's, but again that's 3 different coaches trying to put in the same blocking scheme, which to me indicates it's Green that wants it, or that he actively sought out coaches that were familiar with and liked that system.

I don't honestly understand the difference in the 2 systems other than that denver always has big holes and we're either not blocking Urlacher, or single blocking Burgess the whole game.

But that's why I'm convinced the last 3 years of OL problems have been due to Green's philosophy on OL. Not saying we have a bunch of pro bowlers or anything and obviously Green was not the problem before he got here. I'm pretty sure Lindsay was in over his head but I seriously doubt either Wylie or Loney were.

I'm guessing that's because ever since Trestman left (not coincidentally around eight years ago), our offensive coordinators have been completely inexperienced at the pro level and been exposed as such on an annual basis.

Our talent on the o-line is a problem, no doubt about it. This collection of guys can never be anything more than an average in their current positions. But also our playcalling and awful offensive scheme have not put them in a position to succeed. Hell, they haven't even put the line in a position to be mediocre. Draft a couple guys and bring a couple more in during FA, while getting someone in here that can keep a defense off balance from the box and we'll see some improvement until our young guys hopefully progress.
