BOSTON - New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi has a broken blood vessel in his head and might have had a minor stroke, according to newspaper reports.

Advertisment

Bruschi was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital on Wednesday with unexplained headaches.

The possibility that he had suffered a stroke was reported in Thursday editions of The Boston Herald, which cited unidentified sources. The story also said Bruschi suffered lost vision.

The Boston Globe, citing an unidentified team source, reported on its Web site Thursday that Bruschi had a broken blood vessel in his head and suffered from partial paralysis that has since gone away. A broken blood vessel can cause a stroke if it deprives the brain of oxygen.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Thursday that any information on Bruschi's condition would come from the player or his family. Bruschi spent Wednesday night at the hospital and more tests were scheduled for Thursday morning, James said.

"He is in good condition and will be held for further evaluations," the team said in a statement. "The Bruschi family appreciates everyone's concern, but requests that you respect their privacy at this time."

A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital would neither confirm nor deny that Bruschi had been admitted and referred all questions to the Patriots. Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who was attending the men's college basketball game between Boston College and Rutgers on Wednesday night, declined comment.

A nine-year NFL veteran, Bruschi is the centerpiece of the Patriots defense that helped the team win three of the past four Super Bowls, including a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 6.

On Sunday, Bruschi played in his first Pro Bowl.

Bruschi, 31, was selected as the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week three times, including the first-round playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts. A second team Associated Press All-Pro selection, he ranked second on the team with 128 tackles and tied for second with three interceptions.

He had two fumble recoveries in the team's 20-3 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts, and an interception in the Super Bowl.

Fwiw...

I suffered a stroke on December 28, 1979. It started with vision problems and ended with a severe migraine headache that lasted 72 hours. I permanently lost some periphrial vision in my left eye. Tests indicated that the cause of the stroke was an A-V malformation... a network of small, weak blood vessels that had been present on/in my brain from birth. My doctors recommended immediate brain surgery to remove the problem. I refused immediate action, as I was in my last semester of graduate school, and scheduled entry in to the hospital for August 1, 1980. My doctors warned me that I could have another stroke at any time, even a series of small strokes but I wanted that masters degree badly. I did have another, much milder stroke on the last day of July the day before my admittance. What was supposed to be a relatively routine two hour procedure turned into a 7 1/2 hour marathon for my surgeon.

There is a happy ending to this story... with the exception of of the lost periphrial vision, I have made complete recovery. I did have to take anti-seisure medication for about 9 years following the surgery. I had two seisure episodes during that nine year span.

All of my weight lifing/training personal records were set after the strokes/surgery. I was deemed "a miracle" at that time by my doctors. I do not believe that I would have been able to return to playing status if I had been a professional athlete at that time. I am sure that treatment and surgical procedures have improved since my problem. I think it would be wise for all of us to pray for Bruschi's physical recovery and not worry about his return as a player. I have a feeling that he will continue to be successful no matter the outcome.

It is such a huge swing of emotions for the guy. He was the pre-game poster child playing with his kids on the field during the superbowl..... I wish him a fast recovery.
