Beating out other regional animal names such as:

The Drowned Rats
The Puppies (think about it)
The Crayfish
The Geaux Gators

I love the name. State Bird. Symbol of region. Able to eat hundreds of Hornets.

I think the name is horrible, but the logos are pretty cool, even if they sorta rip off us in one of them.

They definitely would be contenders in a junior high school girls' graphic design contest.

Well, you can rule out the icans, Apple will sue. I'm guessing we'll be talking about the Pelly's before long.

**** it, I'm going all out and buying me some gear if this goes down. Plastic wrap that stuff and like Mitch Hedberg says...."Who knows". Like throwing a cheap potatoe in the oven that costs nothing and takes a long time.

Wait a minute, so the girly stuff in slinslin's post was bogus? The stuff in Chaplin's looks pretty decent.

There were so many better options. Gators, Cajuns, or better yet give the proper name back -- Jazz and let Utah find something more appropriate (Bigamists, Wagoneers, Eagles), or, give Utah "Lakers" since the Lakers are no longer in Minneapolis. Then we call the Lakers the Celebs or something. I know, call them the SoCal "Green" in honor of the sensibilites of the constituency.

I feel like they are a little behind the times with this, actually. I have no problem with the name. But the colors a little bit muted, and the logo a bit staid. Feels like the early 2000s. And why would you ever have a pelican that's not in profile?

With the popularity of the new/old Warriors scheme, for example, I think they would be better served by being a little bolder. Of course, I wish the Suns would do the same thing as the Warriors as well...

Trademarks for the New Orleans Pelicans, Bullsharks, Swamp Dogs, Rougarou and Mosquitos have been filed on behalf of the New Orleans Hornets NBA Limited Partnership, according to the website. The reports were filed Dec. 5 by Anil V. George, a lawyer at NBA Properties Inc.

I thought Swamp Dogs was the best of the bunch. Rougarou was sorta cool too.

"Bullsharks" would have been asking for trouble. I could have gone for "Sand Sharks." "Mosquitos" would be no improvement over "Hornets."
