can anyone give me a good reason why a win is not just a point, like every other sport? it seems to me that the system is ridiculous, especially now that teams cannot tie. am i missing something?

Yes - because you get one point for either an Overtime Loss, or a Shootout Loss.

Basically, if the scores ends regulation a tie, both teams are guaranteed a point, with the eventual winner getting another point.

Remember how an OT loss used to be 0pts. So in overtime both teams would play for the tie, to get the 1pt......snooooozzers

yeah, i get that, but in no other sport do they gauge how far you make it. if you loose by one or loose by fifty, either way you loose. i guess i'm wondering why it was ever different for hockey.

As much as I didn't like ties, I dislike the "3-point game" even more. It doesn't make sense that OT games are worth more points (and this year, 3 points are guaranteed if the game goes to OT). If they want to reward a team for getting to OT before they lose, maybe they should give that team 0.5 pts and the winning OT team 1.5 pts. I'd prefer that there be strictly wins and losses, with no point for OT losses, but that's probably not going to happen.

i still think it should just be one point, per game, winner takes it. why did this start in the first place. but yes, ties suck. who wants to watch a game where there might be no end?

Pens win their first game tonight, yet because of the OTL rule, they still have more points than the 3-win Thrashers. 1 win and 9 losses is better than 3 wins and 7 losses? Arg!

It's really a historical thing, but I do think that giving the losing team a point in an overtime loss is alright because they basically have changed the format of the game going into overtime and beyond. Four on Four is a lot easier to score. Further, the shootout was added for fan excitement. I can't imagine playing 65 minutes of hockey to lose your point on a lousy shootout.

I'm fine with it, but they probably should have left the game alone and played 5 on 5 through a 5 minute overtime, ending in a win for one team or tie at the end.
