Texas A&M's basketball program will begin a new era, as Friday night's news that Samford head coach Bucky McMillan is headed to College Station to replace Buzz Williams, who departed for Maryland earlier this week. For those unaware of McMillan's background, the 41-year-old is one of the top offensive minds, leading a once-struggling Samford program to four consecutive 20-win seasons.
Due to the Bulldogs' speed, shooting efficiency, and relentless defense, the term "Bucky Ball" made waves during the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament after Samford nearly defeated Kansas. Future Hall of Fame head coach Bill Self praised McMillan, whose rise in the coaching ranks was only beginning.
McMillan's philosophy is the opposite of Buzz William's defense-first approach, which focuses on a high-paced offense focused on passing, cutting, and finding the best shot available. This will be a sight for sore eyes in Reed Arena next season compared to Williams' stale offensive game plan. For those who feel that he is a "risky" hire, remember that Florida HC Todd Golden was coaching San Francisco before arriving in Gainsville.
Now, the work begins, starting with a roster with just one player, sophomore forward Chris Mcdermott, remaining. Still, according to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, Texas A&M will be working with a substantial NIL package that could shore up the depth chart in due time.
The transfer portal contains more than enough talent to help replenish the roster in the coming months, while several Samford starters are expected to follow McMillan to College Station. This was the right hire after Williams' six-year tenure and will hopefully energize the fan base as Thamel and Jeff Borzelo expect to be the case.

"The energy and style should help engage an A&M fan base that isn't organically a basketball group. A&M is expected to have nearly $7 million available in NIL and revenue share this season, a competitive number for the SEC that should give Texas A&M a chance to be competitive in the conference."
