Eddie Howe has warned the rest of English football that Newcastle United’s first domestic trophy for 70 years has only made them hungry for more success.
Howe is the first manager since Joe Harvey in 1969 to win a major piece of silverware with 24 of his predecessors trying and failing to end the most infamous trophy drought in English football.
“We are desperate for more,” said a visibly emotional Howe in front of around 150,000 fans. “When you have had a taste of something like this, it makes you hungry for more and that is how we all feel at the moment. Hopefully this is just the start. There is a lot of work ahead of us but we have experienced this feeling now and we want more.”
“When I came to this football club I had a dream to win a trophy, but that was all it was. You hope and dream that you can be the one who wins a trophy for this football club and these fans. To have been able to do that is incredibly special.”

Alan Shearer takes the stage
Newcastle’s all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer: “I wanted this to happen in my lifetime and it’s happened. Eddie Howe and those players have done this city so proud.
“I was lucky enough to win the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers but two weeks ago at Wembley is the best feeling I’ve had on or off a football pitch.
“Every single player brought their A-game [in the final]. Eddie’s put himself in a bracket other managers were unable to. He deserves all the credit and accolades that comes his way.”

‘More than 200,000 people already in the city centre’
The Geordies are made of strong stuff and it is just as well as the temperature is already dropping on the Town Moor and we are still more than two hours away from the team arriving on stage.
The crowd, though, continues to grow steadily and once the parade has finished you are going to see more people around the stage than you would for a headline act at Glastonbury.
More than 150,000 tickets have been taken by fans for the Town Moor party and the early estimate is that there are more than 200,000 people already in the city centre, with many of them packed on to the roads where the bus will travel along from St James’ Park.

‘This is what a Geordie carnival looks like’
The crowds lining the route for the bus parade are already at least 20 people deep with some grabbing a prime spot at 9am to ensure they were in the front row.
Every single bar in the city centre, Jesmond and Gosforth, which are all walking distance to the Town Moor, where the main party is taking place have been packed since before lunchtime. Newcastle has, basically, stopped to celebrate their football team’s first major trophy since 1969.
Despite the cold, there are already thousands of people on the Town Moor too, watching a full replay of Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Party on the Moor gets under way
Good afternoon and welcome to coverage of Newcastle United’s League Cup celebrations.
Eddie Howe guided the club to their first major trophy since 1969 a little over two weeks ago when they saw off Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored Newcastle’s goals in the 2-1 victory at Wembley and now more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the “Party on the Moor” event put on by the club that will include an open-top bus parade through the city centre.
Before the parade the Carabao Cup final will be shown on a big screen in Town Moor. That will be followed by main stage entertainment from the likes of Sonny Tennet, Ellie Scougall, The Belta Reivers and Paige Temperley, before the bus parade begins.
Newcastle’s first team players and staff will depart from St James’ Park at around 4:30pm. The convoy will turn left onto Percy Street, proceed past Haymarket and travel onto the Great North Road. The bus is due to arrive at Town Moor at 5pm and the players are not expected to be on stage until around 6:30pm.
Before that, a legends Q&A session featuring Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Bob Moncur and Newcastle Women is scheduled for 5pm. There will also be a light show by shirt sponsor Sela before the event finishes at 7:30pm.
