QB:

AZ: Carson Palmer---$11M
SE: Russell Wilson---$817K
SL: Sam Bradford---$17.6M
SF: Colin Kaepernick---$1.63M

At some point SE and SF are going to have to sign Wilson and Kaepernick to long-term deals---it will be at least another year for Wilson. Kaepernick, on the other hand, has completed his third year.

AZ: Daryn Colledge---$7.28M
SE: Pat McQuistan (2013 Cap Figure: $3.38M)
SL: Chris Williams (2013 Cap Figure: $1.38M)

SE: K.J. Wright---$766K
SL: Alec Ogletree---$1.6M

SL: Quinton Pointer---$169K
SF: Dan Skuta---$1.65M

Interesting NFC West Questions
:

Arizona:

Can they get Larry Fitzgerald and Darnell Dockett to restructure their contracts in order to be able to bring some of their own key free agents back and to be able to address key areas in free agency?

Key UFA to re-sign: LB Karlos Dansby

Seattle:

What will they do regarding the hefty contracts for Percy Harvin, Sydney Rice, Zach Miller and Cliff Avril, especially in light of their lack of production this year?

Key UFA to re-sign: DE Michael Bennett

St. Louis:

How can they keep justifying Sam Bradford's huge cap numbers?

Key UFA to re-sign: none.

San Francisco:

What kind of money are they going to give Colin Kaepernick and how will it affect their cap situation with a number of key players heading for UFA status in a year or two?

Key UFA to re-sgn: Anquan Boldin

Good stuff, Mitch. I don't see CC on this list. Think he should be in place of Abraham, who should be a LB. I see it is hard to do apples to apples since two teams play a 4-3, and two play a 3-4.

Really enjoying reading your summaries, keep up the good work.

I could see Seattle letting Rice and or Harvin go. They have cost a lot of money with almost no contributions. If either or both are let go they have little leverage to get a large contract from any team. I think Miller is somewhat in the same boat. What kind of money is Sherman going to command soon. He seems like the type of guy who could demand a new contract before his old one is expired and I could see him sitting out if he doesn't get it.

Still not sold on Kaepernick being a long term solution at QB for SF. He didn't exactly light it up yesterday as a passer and has had a pedestrian season.

You are sure right about the Sherman contract and they need to reward Earl Thomas too.

They still owe a lot of guaranteed money to Harvin and Rice...not as much to
Avril and Miller.

Dead money with 2014 release of WR Rice: $3.6M
Dead money with 2014 release of WR Harvin: $9.6M
Dead money with 2014 release of DE Avril: $2.25M
Dead money with 2014 release of TE Miller: $2.0M

Regarding Kaepernick---he just finished his first full season of starting. To have accomplished what he already has in a year and a half is very impressive. But, as you question, just how much would the 49ers want to commit to him at this point? Yet, can they afford to wait?

Bradford is in his last year of his rookie contract. So unless they sign him to an emormous extension his cap hit for 2015 will be way smaller than 2014.

Great job Mitch. I think SF is there now as Kaepernick just finished the 3rd year of a four year rookie deal which means he is now eligible for a new deal according to the new rookie scale. Wilson has another year before he is eligible. They will both get paid and that will change their cap situation.

That's good stuff Mitch, especially the way you have it broken down at each position

Now how does each team stand going into 2014?

This will be interesting because Sherman, like Kaepernick is eligible after this season and you know he will have to be paid and if he is then so will Earl Thomas. It might be hard for them to keep their DBackfield together. KInd of like our problem with Q a few years ago when you had Fitz playing basically the same position.

SF has Kaep, Crabtree, and Aldon Smith hitting free agency after next season if not extended and all will be among or the highest paid players at their position. That along with Bowman will be the core of that team going forward with VD/Gore/Staley/Smith type guys moving on or the Niners won't re-sign their youth and the aforementioned guys will age out.

Not that worried about them long term, can't see Kaep/Crabs/Aldon making up the core of a winning team and their last two drafts have been abysmal.

Now wouldn't that be interesting if just as SK gets the cap situation under control for the Cardinals the niners and hags start to enter cap hell.

I would gladly take Seattle's upcoming cap hell to have a consistent SB contender. Starting in 2015 when Fitz is likely gone I think our cap situation looks really good. This draft is a big one for Keim.

What would Fitz's dead money look like in 2015, 16, 17 & 18 even if he was gone?

St. Louis:

Key UFA to re-sign: none.
Great breakdown Mitch. Always enjoy your posts.

Bradford gets one more year and his fate is likely tied to OC Shottenheimer too IMO. Sam was playing at a high level before the injury, and that was mostly without a ground game(before Z.Stacy was named starter). Zero ground game, actually.

Rams cap casualties will be C Scott Wells, OG Harvey Dahl and CB Finnegan. I'm good with all that.

Their biggest decision will be whether or not to re-sign Rodger Saffold and start him at OG where he was a monster last season, and as a 3rd OT. Problem is he has durability issues and may want LT/RT money, which St Louis won't give him IMO.

Joe Barksdale is the RT now.

There's no excusing the 2012 draft for San Francisco, but was the 2013 draft so bad (as far as we can tell right now)?

Eric Reid is a good player.

DE Carradine didn't see a single snap. That's not good.

TE Vance McDonald was on the field for almost half of their offensive snaps; he's more of a blocking TE right now, anyway.

LB Corey Lemonier had a sack in limited playing time.
