The Commanders continue to do their homework on draft prospects who can help improve the secondary next season. They will be hosting an experienced corner for a top-30 visit.

According to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network, Washington will meet versatile USC corner Jaylin Smith on a top 30 visit.

Standout at the Senior Bowl with experience all over the secondary has been a player Washington has been tied to throughout the process.

Jaylin Smith is one of my top underrated prospects in the draft, and plays with versatility in the slot, out wide at corner. He even had some reps at safety. 2024 was Smith's best season as he moved from the slot to the outside corner for USC, and finished with career best grades on PFF. He excelled as a man-coverage corner with an 83.9 man-coverage grade and an 82.5 overall coverage grade. Smith also takes pride as a run-stopper at the corner position, and finished 2024 with an 80.1 run defense grade. He's not afraid to look for contact in the gap or backfield, and rarely ever misses a tackle.

When I watch the film and compare the frame size, I see a lot of Mike Sainristil in his game, with his ability to play inside and outside, and his 5-foot-10 187-lbs frame. They both play with a physical presence and a mindset of playing with 100% effort on every rep. Smith displays great hand usage when pressing at the line, and fluid hips when sticking in coverage. The former Trojan also loves to flash his instincts and ball skills, and competes at the catch point against receivers.

If I, an NFL defensive coordinator, want CBs in the draft who can press at the line, match through the route, and be opportunistic at the catch point, I have my eye on USC's Jaylin Smith. His pick vs. Maryland (play 1) was one of my "HOLY CRAP" plays of the pre-draft process. pic.twitter.com/PFVpcU94Ld

Jaylin Smith is currently ranked as the 212th overall prospect on PFF's Big Board, but has received early Day 3 grades from scouts and media recently, meaning Washington might have to select him at pick 128, unless they acquire more picks in a trade back. Washington should draft Smith and put him on the outside where he said he's more comfortable, and allow Mike Sainristil to go back inside, and flourish as a franchise nickel corner where he played at in Michigan. If there's a corner in Day 2 or 3 of the draft that fits Washington's culture, Jaylin Smith is at the top of the list.
