The Indianapolis Colts have made five new free-agent signings to their roster. Let's break down each of those additions.

GM Chris Ballard made a few big splashes on Day 1 of NFL free agency, addressing the secondary--a massive need--with cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Camryn Bynum. Ballard also added competition at quarterback by signing Daniel Jones and made some depth additions with defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and running back Khalil Herbert.

So ,what do these signings mean for the Colts? Let's go beyond the numbers with what you need to know.

CB Charvarius Ward

Ward's skill set fits well with the more aggressive playstyle we are going to see under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. He's a physical defender who is comfortable playing on an island and pressing wide receivers at the line of scrimmage to disrupt their routes. He is just one year removed from an All-Pro season in 2023.

S Cam Bynum

In Anarumo's defense, a lot gets put on the plate of the safety position, who is quarterbacking the back end of the defense. Bynum's versatility makes him an ideal fit for Anarumo's scheme, that adjusts on the fly, throws different looks at quarterbacks, and disguises coverages often. Bynum also adds a ball-hawking presence to the safety spot as well.

QB Daniel Jones

Daniel Jones will be competing with Anthony Richardson for the starting quarterback role. He has 69 career starts in the NFL and that experience could give him an advantage. However, Jones' accuracy did dip last season and the Giants' offense lacked the ability to generate explosive plays through the air.

IDL Neville Gallimore

Depth at this position was a must. For starters, before adding Gallimore, the Colts had just four defensive tackles on the roster, but in addition to that, improved play behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart is a must. At a heavily rotated position, quality depth is important. Last season, by PFF's metrics, both Taven Bryan and Raekwon Davis ranked among the worst in run stop rate and pass rush win rate.

RB Khalil Herbert

Ballard said at the NFL combine that the Colts needed more production from the backup running back role. Last season, Tyler Goodson and Tre Sermon combined for just 88 carries and that was with Jonathan Taylor missing three games. The Colts could also benefit from having a pass catching presence at the position as well. This addition shouldn't stop them from adding to the running back room in the draft either.
