Last Friday, the NFL Network had their first pre-draft show and their initial draft projections for the first 10 picks. The guy running the show (name escapes me right now but is a draft guru type) said that he was convinced that San Diego would trade out of the top pick and that Marty Shottenheimer is targeting Shaun Taylor as his guy to help him win now and help him keep his job. The show refused to guess as to who the Chargers would be trading with but it was pretty obvious that they thought that there was no way the Chargers would trade down below the 3rd or 4th pick because Taylor would be gobbled up if they went below the 3rd or 4th pick.

Read between the lines-Chargers and Cardinals have a history together. They have traded before and because they are not in the same division.

I see a trade between the Chargers and the Big Red. The Cards get the guy they have wanted for a while (Manning) and Chargers still get their guy.

As I've been saying along time, a AZ/SD trade makes all the sense in the world, since when has the NFL made sense though.
The big question is how much does SD want in return for that first pick, they'll have to come down off that high horse if they think AZ will trade with them.

Also, I don't think SD can drop behind AZ if they actually covet Taylor, we'll snap him up if Eli is gone, so we are their only option IMO.

SD traded down to #5 with Atlanta in 01

Atlanta gave up #5 overall, that years 3rd rounder, the next years 2nd rounder, and Tim Dwight.

Use that as a starting point and discount given they are only moving down two spots instead of four.

I'm of the opinion that Eli Manning would help us in the long term the most, so I'm probably more apt to trade up than most on this board. So here is my possible offer for moving up.

AZ offers #3 overall, 4th rounder, and next years 3rd rounder.

In return AZ gets #1 overall, and SDs 6th round pick this year, and 7th next year, and we'll base the 2k5 pick on playing time say Eli starts 8 games in 2k4.

Thats my offer, not exciting for SD, but it's "something" and I doubt SD would seriously consider it. I'm more willing to trade next years picks than this years, because I bet our picks are in the middle of the pack next draft.

That's giving up the farm man just for us to move up for one player. Thats quality picks a 3rd and 4th rounder this year? We need talent not just one player. This defense is depleted in talent and we need to reload.

Truthfully, I believe the Cards should trade down and try to get two 1st. round picks in the middle and latter part of the round. Why blow the bank on a high 1st. round pick with a 50 % or 60% chance of making it and screw up the good cap situation we find ourselves in now. Trade down, get some decent, serviceable players and coach them to greatness.

I would love to see this trade. I think getting a franchise QB is far and away the best thing this team can do for it's future. What could this team do with a guy like Peyton Manning? I would love to find out. Eli is more mobil and faster than Peyton and is supposed to have a better arm. Ben Roethlisberger is even more gifted than Eli. I say we draft Eli or Ben and start getting excited again about our teams play just like back in the day with Neil Lomax and Jim Hart.

i say we do it, it is true our defense needs playmakers but i think it needs to be somewhat built through free agency, we can't count on rookies to come in and start for us right away and other than our first and second rounders i wouldn't count on any rookie coming in and changing around our defense anyways.

Stay at 3 and If Eli and Ben are gone, trade down a few spots, add picks, draft Phillip Rivers. We need our picks badly.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! If we trade out of a spot to get a HUGE impact player (like, oh, say, a franchise QB, like Eli, Ben, or that Byron guy last year) to draft two middling prospects that probably aren't even first round talent but are in areas of need (mmm, Johnson and Pace) I will CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

This is a chess game. Sit tight at #3. At #3 pick Sean Taylor, Fitz or Big Ben. I'll be happy with any of the three.

If we trade with SD we will have to bite a big salary to sign Eli. Not sure the Cards will do that, given the up front money needed to sign a #1 pick.

Also, if we trade up we will be picking Eli not Ben. I'll take the potential I see in Big Ben over Eli anyday...

What we do in the draft is somewhat dictated by who we sign in free agency before the draft. If we get no one, then we might trade down to get extra picks, if we sign two guys who fill immediate needs, then we might stay at #3 at get the QB or best player on the board. I do not want to trade up and cost us picks. Its either stay or trade down. If I were the cards, I would target two players in FA that could come in and start right away next year. Preferably on defense.Get them signed before the draft, and now you have so much flexibility to do what you want in the draft, and not let the draft dictate what you do.

If I am AZ I do not see trading up and giving up anything. I still think one of the two QB's will be there and I will be happy with either. Aside from that Mr. Bidwill will not be very interested in paying 1st pick money when Ben R may very well be as good as Manning. I would take Manning between the two but either case it is a crap shoot.

I definitely would not trade up from #3 to #1. The cost in high draft picks would be too much and we need to fill critical positions now. I doubt that both Manning and Rotlisberger will be gone (I also prefer Ben). But if they are gone, that leaves us with Larry Fitzgerald, Sean Taylor and Robert Gallery. I'd be happy with any of the three. Actually, Gallery may well be the best player in the draft. With the way Clement preformed last year and after Coach verifies by looking at film prior to the draft, I would not be surprised to see the Cards take Gallery. He plays LT, but I would think he could make the transformation the RT.

I would not take Rivers. I know he played real good in the Senior Bowl, but I just believe a lot more of his passes are going to be batted down by big, tall and Quick DLs in the NFL.

I don't think the Cards wants to put all their money on the OLine if they choose Gallery. That would tie up all the money on the Oline alone for a long time and to tell you the truth it may be not worth it when a R. Williams,Taylor or Fitz is sitting there if both QB is gone.

Hey, if SD is willing to do it on the cheap, I'm all for it. By on the cheap, I'd figure something like the #3 overall, our 3rd and Clement for the #1 overall. That's nowhere near too pricey, Clement is a turnstile, and there are plenty of quality OT on the market to fill the void before the draft in FA.

Now, of course, this is a pipe dream, and I don't thin the Chargers would ever be stupid enough to make this trade, but who knows???

Seriously Stout, I think that San Diego might be tempted by that trade. They need OLine help and they probably would still get the player they would have ended up picking if they chose first. I don't see them picking up a QB.

Well, the difficulty with my scenario (other than it's probably not enough) is that I think they want Gallery. If they get Clement, Gallery probably wouldn't be in the works. We'll see. If they get Clement, they may consider that need filled and look to get Taylor or one of the Receivers, or even Winslow.

True. They have many needs and that's why they may consider your scenario. It's important to note that the only person that might get drafted, if we swapped with them, that they are considering is Fitzgerald. They would get a starting tackle, a third round pick and a hell of alot smaller signing bonus to contend with - and still get their man.

Exactly...so they may, just MAY bite on this deal. I'd be THRILLED if they did. But, I won't hold my breath ;)

I just don't want to see a trade down, NO WAY!!! No need to trade up either, at 3 the Cards are in a great position to land either a stud QB, One of the stud WRs or Sean Taylor. Green likes the O-line so I doubt he goes O-line with #3,but I would be happy with a QB, WR or Taylor.
