I'm involved with a group trying to bring attention to City Government about the potential benefits of constructing a new stadium in the City of Long Beach near our airport and attracting an NFL franchise.

For those of you who followed the aborted efforts to build the Cards facility near Sky Harbor, do you know whether those concerns were ultimately lifted? I seem to recall that when all was said and done and the Cards had already settle on a new direction, the FAA reversed itself and said the stadium could be built where originally proposed. Is that the way it happened? If not, does anyone know if specific guidelines were adopted on how close to airport runways a sports stadium can be built.

Thanks for any help you can provide and if you would like to take a look at our website it is :

Go Cards!!!

I believe it wasn't the FAA as much as it was Sky Harbor airport and the City of Phoenix. I think the FAA ruled that the stadium was with in the allowable levels of building height. The BOB is sitting in the same flight path on the west runway and this was never an issue

This is off of his website:

Would any team want to come here? Just who would we get?

There are currently five NFL Teams who have shown interest in coming here to Southern California The San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts are probably the front runners due to the fact that they are near the end of their contracts with their current stadiums. Neither one of those cities seem to be able to secure the financing needed to build new stadiums for their team. It does not appear that the NFL is willing to finance those deals like they would in L.A. Other owners who have expressed desire to relocate to L.A. are the New Orleans Saints and Minnisota Vikings both are tied up in contracts for the next couple of years and would have to pay stiff fines if they leave early. The last to flirt with the idea, is the Raiders threat to return, though this seems less likely.

Minnesota Vikings? That's surprising. Red, you might want to run a spellchecker through that site.

redmark: good luck in your efforts...you clearly have an uphill battle - especially with the complete mess the California State budget has become - it would cleary take a ton of dough from the NFL to complete...

Good Idea Red! At first I thought you were referring to Red McCombs! Unfortunately there are quite a few typos on the site which I'll bring to the attention of the site master. It's a low budget self-financed effort. But after their 18-17 botch job against the Cards maybe Mini Vikings is right on.

That was mainly a political battle between the two mayors, wasn't it not?

I remember the initial location was moved to a different part of the property to locate it further from the end of the runway and off to the side. If the main concern was the height and not the proximity than that's more of a design issue. The site we have in mind is off to the side of the runways, not inline with the takeoff and landing paths.

I guess will just have to talk to the FAA it gets that far.

Thanks for the note.

Come on there's nothing wrong with the budget here (-:

I just shelled out $112 bucks yesterday for my annual State Parks pass and boat launch stickers. Ironically I only fish at 2 state Parks, San Luis Reservoir, and Lake nacimiento, and the parks pass is only valid at San Luis. Last year it was $35 for the pass and 35 for the boat fee, this year it's 67 and 45.

I would think any ballpark that's going to need public money would be impossible in California in this current financial climate.

Our understanding is the NFL is willing and able to front the entire cost of a brand new stadium. As opposed to providing the $150 million loan for an upgrade like the Rose Bowl or Coliseum.

It's could create an annual budget windfall to the city of between $50 to $100 million even if we've field a losing team.:D
