The New England Patriots shook up their quarterback room on Thursday by trading second-year signal-caller Joe Milton III to the Dallas Cowboys.

It wasn't the trade that surprised people as much as the compensation the Patriots got in return for the quarterback. New England shipped Milton and a seventh-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

There has been trade talk surrounding Milton throughout the offseason with the belief that the Patriots might net a fourth or even third-round draft pick for the promising young quarterback.

The fact that they only got a fifth-rounder in return, along with giving up a seventh-round pick, is significantly less than a third-round pick straight up for the player. Granted, it's still a small win considering they drafted Milton with a sixth-round pick in 2024.

Here's how the NFL world reacted to the trade on social media:

The #Patriots return for Joe Milton III was fine.

Maye is the guy, Dobbs is a veteran who knows he’s the backup, and you upgrade your 7th to a 5th in exchange for someone would have been inactive for a majority of the season anyway.

They were never getting much more back. pic.twitter.com/jocvc2Uu7T

"Joe Milton can throw it a country mile and he has incredible athleticism..

Maybe the Patriots can bundle some picks and get back up into the first or second round" @BostonConnr#PMSLivehttps://t.co/oBTGNZ31BJpic.twitter.com/cr86vBGvQk

Patriots fans thought Milton was worth a top 60 pick just a week ago.
Honestly, if this is all you're getting, it's not even worth trading him. https://t.co/U8eMAZMGQg

Explains the timing

From a #Patriots perspective, increasing Milton’s trade value over the summer would’ve been ideal, but sounds like NE did right by the player https://t.co/Z6n8HmxHNt

If the latter part here is true, the #Patriots should really stop doing this. First Matt Judon, now Milton.

Take the best offer. https://t.co/0ZrYRoaZXl

I don’t understand why the Patriots were hell bent on moving Joe Milton. Nothing wrong with having a good backup QB and they traded him away smh. https://t.co/g1inDb2wyr

Joe Milton had 3y/$3.4M remaining in his deal.

The Patriots signed Josh Dobbs to a 2y/$8M contract ($3.8M guaranteed).

Milton flashed elite upside in his lone start. We know what Dobbs is.

Potentially downgrading your QB2 and paying him more for a Day 3 pick swap?

Idk man. https://t.co/R84SstXL0W

I can’t make any sense of this trade. If you’re the Patriots, good job selling high in theory only you didn’t get anything back? Lmao like what?
Why not keep Milton behind Maye at a cheap cost controlled price? A 5th is enough to not want that? https://t.co/GxsrZsvs5O

Awful deal for the Patriots, a 7th and Joe Milton for a 5th.

Hate it, we had all the leverage and that’s what we get, no way we should’ve dealt him away for less than a Top 100 pick.

Patriot fans thought they were getting a third for Milton. pic.twitter.com/R2Hu2We4KV

I don’t understand the rush for the Patriots to trade Milton.
Used a 6th to get him and get a 5th back while trading away a 7th. Essentially the same. Felt like he had more value, especially given the Pats didn’t absolutely have to trade him now.
Feel like if Maye progresses… https://t.co/po0tuD3JQr

Did we (Patriots fans) really overestimate Milton's value? Dude played one good half vs a 3rd string D. And in that amazing game he still only had 240 yards, a TD and fumbled. Nobody sees him as a franchise starter and they traded him so you don't start asking funny QB questions. pic.twitter.com/mfVUby2CmL
