The Arizona State University men's basketball team (18-13) will play at UNLV in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament on Thursday, March 17, at 9 p.m. PT/10 p.m. MST on ESPN2. The winner of the ASU/UNLV game will play the winner of the Miami (Fla.)/South Carolina game, with the date and site TBD. The matchup also has ASU sophomore guard Kevin Kruger competing against his father Lon, the first-year UNLV coach.

A win would give ASU its sixth 19-win campaign in the past 22 seasons (and third under Rob Evans) while two more wins will mark 20 wins for just the fourth time in 20 years (second time under Evans).

Down by 11 now with 2:00 left.

Ike is the only guy that can do anything on this team.

No, but he probably wishes he would have gone to UK since that was the other school that he was looking at.

That is if he was that kind of kid. He seems to be a kid that makes a decission and sticks by it.

Diogu's final three schools were UCONN, Illinois and ASU, not Kentucky.

You think Diogu wishes he had gone to Illinois? :D

No, not at all.

He's likely to be back for his senior year also.

He's the son of teachers and has strong convictions, so he's more likely to stick by a decision and not have any regrets.

You can have strong convictions and still have regrets. I doubt Ike seriously wishes he had gone to Champaign or Storrs, but I'm sure the thought crosses his mind every now and then. How could a competitive athlete not sometimes wish he was in a winning situation?

Not if ASU terminates Evans he won't.

Right, but that's also exactly why Evans might be back. Keep Evans and Ike will likely stay. Get rid of Evans and you've just gotten rid of Ike also.

But if Evans is not the answer at ASU, if Ike stays or goes should be irrelevant. If it is determined that Evans is not a good fit for ASU, or that he is not a good coach/recruiter, why extend the agony? Haven't Ike didn't do much for ASU this year. If they are going to stick with Evans, they need to extend him for multiple years, otherwise recruiting will suffer (i.e. word gets around to all recruits that Evans may not be around in the future).

Besides ASU, these schools were hot after Diogu:

Illinois, Kansas, Georgetown, Alabama, and Connecticut

Maybe Scott meant Kansas.

ASU has two choices:
1. Keep Evans on for another run in 2005-2006 and pray Ike stays out of the draft. But no matter what that clown Tim Healy keeps saying, ASU will not compete for the Pac-10 next year even if Ike stays. Their lack of any sort of D1 caliber PG will again relegate them to the NIT or worse while Ike exhausts his eligibility. Then the cupboard is left essentially bare for another year of Evans or another coach who has to be hired possibly in competition with better gigs such as Cal or Oregon.

2. Drop Evans now and lose Ike to the NBA. They will start rebuilding in 2005-2006 and have their choice of any West Coast coach that wants to get a Pac-10 gig. Of course there will be growing pains and the team will struggle due to the lack of talent left by Evans but in the end the school knows they did not delay the inevitable just for one year of mediocre basketball.

Of course the ABOR will never give ASU the money to buy out Evans so it's going to take a nice contribution from boosters (a la Arizona and Mackovic) to get Evans out of there.
