Apr. 12—MORGANTOWN — Chase Swain tripled and drove in three runs, as the 23rd-ranked WVU baseball team defeated Houston 9-2 on Friday night to move into a three-way tie for first in the Big 12.

The Mountaineers (28-4, 8-3 Big 12) pounded out 15 hits overall inside Schroeder Park in their first-ever meeting against the Cougars (19-15, 5-8), with Skylar King and Logan Sauve collecting three each.

BOX SCORE Swain picked up an RBI single in the second inning to give WVU a 1-0 lead. He tripled in the fourth inning to score Grant Hussey and then drove in Brodie Kresser in the fifth on a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 lead.

With two games remaining in the series, WVU moved into a tie for the conference lead along with Kansas and TCU. The Horned Frogs roughed up the Jayhawks, 14-1, on Friday in the first game of that three-game series.

The game also marked the return of Sam White, who had missed the last nine games with a shoulder injury. White was the designated hitter and went 0 for 4 in his return.

WVU pitcher Griffin Kirn picked up his fourth victory of the season. He went six innings, gave up five hits and two runs, while striking out five. He allowed just one walk. Reese Bassinger picked up his fifth save of the season. He went three innings and allowed no hits or runs.

WVU has now won eight in a row. The Mountaineers hit.429 (6 for 14) with runners in scoring position. Kyle West also had two RBIs.
