After four consecutive seasons of one-and-done in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, No. 6 Florida State women's basketballhas advanced to the second round with a convincing 94-59 win over No. 11 George Masonon Saturday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
It is the first time FSU has made it out of the first round since 2019. The Seminoles will play the winner of the San Diego-State -LSU game, which will tip off at around 10:15 p.m., and are one win away from advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017.
FSU had a dominating first half, going on a 14-0 run and leading by as many as 20 points. The Patriots showed a fight despite being down double digits. They even ended the first half on a 12-4 run, trailing 41-29 heading into the locker room.
The Patriots continued their momentum in the third quarter, cutting FSU's lead by seven points, 49-42, following a 6-0 run led by senior guard Paul Suarez back-to-back 3-point jumper. Suarez led the Patriots with a career-high 25 points. Kennedy Harris added 12 points.
Despite George Mason's efforts to make it a convincing game, the Seminoles kept responding with runs of their own. FSU went on a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter and picked up a 25-point lead, 82-57, with 4:05 left to play. George Mason was held to six points in the fourth.
FSU shot 56.9 percent from the field and was 9 for 20 from behind the ard.
Junior guard Ta'Niya Latsonwas almost unstoppable. George Mason had no answer in containing the nation's top scorer, who dropped 28 points in her third straight tournament appearance. She shot 50 percent from the field and was 11 of 14 from free throws.
Three more Seminoles finished in double figures.
Makayla Timpsonand O'Mariah Gordon each dropped 18 points. For Timpson, she recorded her 16th double-double with 11 of FSU's 44 rebounds. Gordon shot 8 for 13 from the field and added six rebounds and four assists. Sydney Bowles made five 3-pointers to put her at 15 points.
