BATON ROUGE, La. — Florida State junior guard Ta'Niya Latson lived up to her billing as the nation's leading scorer, pouring in 28 points to power the No. 6 Seminoles to a 94-59 win over No. 11 George Mason in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Latson, who entered the tournament averaging 24.9 points per game, showcased her offensive prowess from the opening tip. The All-American guard attacked the basket relentlessly, drawing fouls and converting at the charity stripe at a high clip. Latson scored 16 first-half points while no other Seminole surpassed six.

“Ta’Niya has seen every imaginable coverage," Florida State coach Brooke Wyckoff said before Friday's game. "She's an experienced player, and she knows what to expect, so she's ready to attack with her pace and ability.”

The victory marks Florida State's first NCAA tournament win under Wyckoff's leadership, snapping a two-year streak of first-round exits.

Latson's performance was complemented by strong contributions from senior forward Makayla Timpson, who provided a formidable presence in the paint.

Timpson recorded the 47th double-double of her career, putting up 18 points and 11 rebounds, which marked a new FSU record. She also became the seventh ACC player in history to hit the century mark in blocks in a single season and the first to do so since Brianna Turner of Notre Dame in 2019.

Who will FSU women's basketball play next?

With the win, Florida State advances to the second round to face the winner of the LSU-San Diego State. The Seminoles have never faced the Aztecs. The lone matchup between LSU and Florida State took place on January 3, 2008, with the Tigers winning 73-61 in Tallahassee.
