a translation from a Spanish newspaper, via Hoopshype--

Despite the siren song of the NBA, Goran Dragic processed at Barca. This was assured yesterday in this newspaper since Athens, where today is played with your selection, Slovenia, the pass to the semifinals of Preolímpico. In his mind, get one of the three places to Pekín'08 and then join the ranks of TAU Cerámica, equipment belonging to two years but which has not yet made his debut because of two assignments. The Balkan want to close this way all created uncertainty regarding the strong interest in joining the Phoenix Suns this summer.
"It is true that the Suns wanted to count on me, but I think the best thing for me is to go to Spain and try to make a hole in the Baskonia" confessed yesterday from the capital Helena. The Arizona franchise, which acquired his rights in the final 'draft', has also lowered its interest in the absence of an exit clause that provides compensation to Baskonia for your purchase.
"After two years of assignments in Murcia and in Ljubljana, is my opportunity to succeed in the TAU" stressed the player. "I have always said that my dream is to do something big in Vitoria. After already seen what's happening with the option of the NBA, "he said.
Weak still experience, Dragic's own bid to climb stairs one at a time. "The best thing for my progression's going to continue in Europe. Then, depending on how is my performance and they said the TAU, we'll see what happens with me next summer, "he argued. "Please, nobody has doubt that my goal is to succeed in my team, which is the Baskonia" stressed below. "I have not yet debuted with my team and I have a tremendous desire to play my first match."
Until that time comes-will join the August 11 if Slovenia does not play the Olympics and 30 when he traveled to Beijing, Dragic focuses all his attention on this Preolímpico. 'Tomorrow' by-now-'face a vital game against Puerto Rico. The winner will go to the semifinals and placed a span of Olympic ticket. Of the four semifinalists, only one will run out of big prize.
'A dream'
Slovenia, despite the absences of players such as Smodis, Lorbek or Udrih has fulfilled the first phase with a plenary session. Two wins in as many matches. "We are a good team, although we have noticed these casualties and maybe we need some bench," admitted the director of game, the first election of selector Ales Pipan when you move the bench.
"All of us here want to give maximum play to the Olympic Games," remarked the Slovenian international. "I dream of being in August in Beijing, would be another ambition fulfilled," shared the player of 22 years. "That is why the clash against Puerto Rico, which is doing a good tournament, is the closest thing to an end for us," closed the baskonista.

The Suns must not have made one of those books with Dragic in it. And when will Kerr take Nash and Amare, Shaq or Hill go visit him to persuade him to play here this year?
Fulll court press time.

Quote;

"Slovenia’s Dragic wasn’t sure if he’d make it over this year.

“I don’t know,” Dragic said.

San Antonio drafted me but then traded me to Phoenix, and there would also have to be a buyout at my club, Tau (Ceramica).

“It would be great to play in Phoenix and learn from a point guard like Steve Nash. We’ll see.”"

"oops" I pasted too much, I fixed it.

The buyout is the main problem.

Nash, Stoudemire, Shaq and Hill pay $500,000 respectively.
Then Dragic will join Suns this year. :)

This is from Spain, where the club claim they own Dragic's right. I won't trust their words at all. Spanish media r experts of making up stupid stories in pro sports matters.

I don't understand so I'll just ask.

Can Dragic sign a new contract or renegotiate his contract with his European team and they pay him say 1.5 million up front?

Then we all agree on a buy out. We pay what we can, was that $500,000? Dragic has to come up with the rest. He uses the 1.5 million he got from his European team.

Then Sarver bets the European team owner 1.5 million cash on a poker hand and loses.

Does that solve the problem of Dragic having to come up with his buyout money?

At this point, it looks like the money is the issue. If Dragic wanted out AT ALL COSTS, it looks like the Slovenian court case would have worked. But it seems obvious the Suns are unwilling to pay what it would take to ge him here NOW.

From his agent's point of view, bringing him over in 2010 makes much more sense. The Suns will have lots of cap space and hopefully he'll have a much bigger reputation.

I'm not sure this is a bad situation for the Suns in long run. Dragic gets a couple of years with the same team that trained Calderon and certainly better preparartion than D-League.. Still, it is disappointing.

I'd rather have him here learning from Steve Nash and Terry Porter.

Sadly Kerr and other media sources almost convinced me that Dragic might be coming over this season. The reality is the Suns need a veteran PG now and need Dragic here to learn the ropes. The Suns cannot depend upon Strawberry as a PG, although it would be nice to see him develop some day.

If the Suns cannot get at least a playable veteran PG now to backup Nash, then the Suns will be eyeing that February trading deadline as a time to start rebuilding.

Sadly the Suns did not chase after Chalmers in the draft when he fell. Yes, I can see Vujanic again. Why didn't Kerr?

Kerr not making a smart, savvy GM move.....what a shock! What has this guy done ever to make anyone think he is ever going to make a good GM. This sucks we get a freakin buddy of Sarver for a GM instead of a QUALIFIED one, yeah great move by ownership.

This is so much hype for a guy we have no idea whether he will do well or not. I would like him to come over because God knows we need a true backup PG, but I mean, this is going to cost a hell of a lot of money for a player who really hasn't proven worthy yet.

I'm not sure why everyone wants to bash Kerr/Sarver for the possibility of Dragic not making it over this season. I mean, the league does have rules it has to follow and the Suns seem to be doing just that. I'm not sure what all of you want.

Sure, we need a backup PG, but that has nothing to do with Kerr and Sarver being unable to bring Dragic over. Their hands are tied.

I think Chap it has more to do with they somewhat knew they could not get him over, yet instead of making a pick that COULD be here and learn from Nash and be developed, they chose a Euro that they knew possibly could never even be here. Thats the point they could have drafted a PG with the pick and then developed him, teams do it all the time. Its not JUST this that people are getting on Kerr/Sarver about, the list goes on and on with the stupid / ridiculous moves these guys have made.

Its not about dragic, its about the whole process of getting a backup for nash over the last 4 years. Its been an utter failure as the suns have THE worst backup PG scenario of any playoff team, and its been that way for a long time. Kerr is a recent(2yr) contributor to this ineptitude, others in the FO have been inept for much longer. The strategy used my many opponents(including the spurs) of beating up nash has worked, in part due to the inability of management to get a decent backup PG.

Right about now it appears that the FO couldnt lure flies to a pile of dung.

Love this quote...sounds like he is itching to come to Phoenix...

“After two years of assignments (in Slovenia), I have my opportunity to succeed with Tau,” Dragic said, through translation. “I have always said that my dream is to do something big (here). … The best thing for my progression is to continue in Europe. Then, depending on my (performance), we’ll see what happens with me next summer.”

Can anyone say Milos Vujanic?:barf:

Plus there are those that feel the Suns knew they couldn't get this guy in uniform this year and were counting on that to avoid spending money on another pick.

He doesn't sound very eager to play in the NBA anytime soon. That, in addition to the complicated and expensive buyout situation, could be the reason why no other team even bothered to bring this guy in for a workout. And yet we keep reading how the Suns seriously considered taking this guy with the #15th pick had Lopez not been available.

Kerr does not have a clue as the Suns GM. If he did not have a commitment from Dragic, he should have passed on him... I mean giving up 500.000 dollars and two second round picks for a player that is not intent on coming to the NBA is ridiculous. I'm not unwilling to take chances on players especially in the second round, however, not when players like Mario Chalmers was still on the board.

I can not bare another year where DJ and LB are touted as the Suns backup PGs. Unless the Suns get a capable backup PG, the Suns should just start rebuilding because they are not going anywhere. Now I am waiting for the Suns to pull off some incredibly dumb trade. Kerr should be a GM in the NBADL, not the NBA... but that is probably being too kind.

I'm pretty sure this is BS. I saw Kerr/Sarver last night at the Suns/Spurs game and I asked Kerr if he was still working on getting Dragic over this year and he said "We are still trying". I then told Sarver that I just wanted to let him know that he wasnt as cheap as some people say he is. Both of them got a kick out of that. :D
