Parting with 2 starting pitchers with not much but cash savings in return...this smells like a means to an end. Sounds to me like we positioning ourselves to go after an ace.

Yep... KT's history would suggest that another, or, multiple moves will follow shortly...

That entices me but scares the hell out of me too.

Tampa will want a killing for Price, and justifably so. I'm almost 100 percent sure Texas is going to sign Cano and go all in on Price themselves with a package beginning with Profar. The price (no pun intended) of prospects is going to be insane for him when it's all said and done, and that's not even getting into the elephant in the room about his pending free agency in a few years.

The cash we freed up could also be used to make a run at the Japanese pitcher (who's name escapes me). We could make an offer for price and if they're asking too much we turn around and use the cash to go after the Japanese kid

I'd love to get Tanaka.

I'm intrigued by it, mostly because he won't cost is prospects. But, is he an ace, or is he just another #2/3 like we already have a couple of?

Between Corbin, Miley and Bradley I think we're set at 2, 3, 4

That's the reason I'm not interested in Smardja (sp) he's solid, but not an ace

He's absolutely been unhittable in Japan and has ace potential. Granted, Japan is akin to AAAA ball and especially with pitchers, its a gamble.

Me personally, I'd be in favor of getting Tanaka and Shark (now that I saw what Detroit got for Fister, I'm convinced Arizona can get Jeff without giving up Bradley, Corbin, Shipley and Skaggs.) I think the three (Corbin, Shark and Tanaka) has potential.

As I mentioned in the Shark thread, it would be a miracle if the Dbacks somehow were able to make a deal for Tanaka... I would bet big $$ that a team like the Yankees win the bidding war...

I've read there are a lot of young SP's available.

Jacob Turner
Homer Bailey
Brett Anderson
Yovani Gallardo

David Price we know is out there as well as Jeff Samardjia.

PLEASE Towers do not get fleeced.

If we are looking for a bat Trumbo would be nice because like Prado he could play OF & back up Goldy at 1B along with bringing some power to the lineup.

I don't see any of those SP's listed as an ace other than Price. I think we have plenty of middle of the rotaion guys. So, no thank you other than Price.

I do like the idea of Trumbo though

Price is going to cost a fortune to trade for and then an additional fortune to extend. There is no way I'd trade for him. If the Dbacks love him then try to get him in the bidding war once he is a free agent, because they'd have to win it anyway or lose him for nothing post trade.

I can't see any team trading a king's ransom for Price without him signing an extension a la Martin Prado.

Well, I dont see Tampa moving him unless they get some premium prospects back and given what some of the other stud pitchers have been getting I dont think Price would sign an extension for less than 20+ million per year for at minimum 5 years.

I think you're probably right about that.

He's the only pitcher that's been talked about in a trade this offseason that Id have any interest in even considering the price of the trade and the price of the contract. I still wouldn't give up Bradley, but I would do Skaggs + one of our Short stops + Matt Davidson + AJ Pollack/another prospect if he'll sign an extension with us.

D-Backs nearly landed Yoenis Cespedes today, but A's wanted more than Skaggs, Pollock, and something else Towers was offering. I guess they wanted Archie, who's untouchable. Either way, Towers backed out, A's kept Cespedes. I can see this being revisited if A's don't get mega deal they think they can get. Don't ask me why they want to trade him.

I would expect Parra to be packaged, as well. Surprised Towers didn't dangle Skaggs and Parra together. A's may have bitten on that one, but I think Towers has some other deal in mind for Parra.

I guess Skaggs is not viewed as a centerpiece, that is why OAK wanted more for Cepedes.

I think Skaggs would be a solid part of ARZ's rotation. Teams are going to try and fleece ARZ in trades. ARZ just needs to back away and not go into panick mode. I think Bradley is as good as any SP they hope to add and Skaggs even if he is at the back of the rotation would be better than Cahill or McCarthy, at least he would be cheaper.

Skaggs still has a TON to prove. His time in the bigs over the past two seasons - which has been limited of course - can only be categorized as horrendous.
Yea - he would be cheaper than Cahill and McCarthy. However, in terms of production, he could very easily be worse. At present, his numbers are worse.
And as I noted in another thread, Bradley has yet to even pitch at the AAA level. It is WAY too premature to place him in the position you seem to continue to toss him into. He's 21. Has looked dominate up to this point. But hasn't pitched an inning beyond AA. Give the kid a chance man...

I think Cahill & McCarthy are too inconsistent and injury prone, whereas Skaggs hasn't gotten a real chance too prove himself at the big league level. The fact that Towers isn't going to bring him up for good because he doesn't have confidence in him is very alarming and more than likely he has already pitched his last game as a Diamondback.

Bradley has been in the minors for 3 years, he IS 21 but he is considered one of the best SP in all the minors. At some point he should be up for good THIS YEAR. I wish ARZ could wait longer for him but I just don't think they are going to get an "Ace" this offseason. Price is the best option out there but ARZ would absolutely have to give up Bradley and spend $20M+ to keep him, they cannot do that. Unless ARZ is willing to be a mediocre team and wait until next year to make a move, they are really limited in terms of options that will help them this year, unless Kendrick sells to someone with big $$$.

What's so "alarming" about it?? What has Skaggs done to warrant more innings at the big league level than he's gotten? I'm pretty sure that if he's not shipped out this offseason, he'll have yet another shot to win a spot on the rotation. I'd like to see that happen, however, I have my doubts...

Bradley pitched 2 innings his first year in the minors... So, he's had 2012 and 2013 in the minors. Again, with none of those innings above AA (120 innings at that level).
I think it's unrealistic to expect that he would be ready to become a fulltime starter at the big league level in 2014. Not saying it can't happen, however, it would be the exception to the rule...
The Dbacks are not in the running for Price. There is no way KT is tossing in Bradley and they can never afford paying a player $20 million or more a season. If they did, the rest of the team would be sucked dry and we'd be left with a great starter... and literally nothing else...
So again - we get back to the dilemma I referenced in the other thread, where the Dbacks and KT are left to try to find otherwise hidden gems and take some chances on guys.... We'll see what transpires...

I think the teams that get young pitching payoff are the ones that can't afford to do anything but that. They don't trade them away because they can't afford what they get in return, and they put a lot of effort into developing them.

Otherwise, bringing those pitchers along is an art, and it's clear pitchers who flail in some organizations can flourish in a different environment. I'm not convinced the D-Backs aren't a flailing pitcher organization, but I don't have anything to back me up other than perception.

Are Miley and Corbin "flailing" in your opinion? Did Delgado "flail" last season?
I think you first point above is interesting... However, teams that fit that description do eventually - always - lose that young pitching via trade or free agency... Look at David Price this year. There are a plethora of other examples for teams like the Dbacks, Rays, A's, etc...
The goal is to try to compile a winning team during that duration of time when you have in our possession, a David Price type talent...
