Its the best thing to happen to the 49ers this year. I applaud Jed York for having the guts to do this move right now. I dont know how well Singletary is going to do but we might as well give him a shot since we were going nowhere with Nolan once again. We might do well or we might not but at least at the end of the year we know where Singletary stands and we'll make a move either way at the end of the year

The main thing is hope the Yorks resist the urge to hire Dennis Green. While I believe Green would probably work harder in SF than he did in ARizona, I still think in the end you'll get a guy who's more interested in hiring friends and showing pie charts than coaching anymore. Cards fans should probably hope they do hire Green.

I was watching TV this morning before work and ESPN was saying Green wants to coach again, will soon, and SF is a logical possibility given his past ties to Bill Walsh and the desire of many in SF to bring in a Walsh disciple.

Nolan was 18-37 in SF and even though there is no record to judge Singletary on as a head coach, he was there for every game of Nolan's tenure.

Something else Singletary has in common with Mac. :)

To this point in the season the 49er's have given up the most points in the entire league; and they promote the DC to Head Coach.

Brilliant!

Yeah but to be fair, it was Nolan's defense not Singletary's, and much of the blame for that is all the turnovers from JT O'Sullivan.

No idea if he'll be a good coach or not but he wasn't really running the defense, nolan was.

Sort of works, Russ.

ACtually it does. I just don't think SF quit on Nolan the way the Cards quit on Tobin and Mac that year.

But you are right in both cases the defense was probably more the head coaches fault than the DC.

Singletary wasn't even the DC, Manusky is, which makes the move even more of a gamble. Maybe SF should have hired Tony Robbins.

Good point. Can you imagine how bad the last Tobin team would have lost to this years' Giants? I suppose the 9ers talent levels are WAY better, arguably anyway.

Yeah he was some assistant head coach like title to keep him from leaving.

nolan was in charge of the defense that's part of why he got fired, they knew he wasn't an offensive guy so they can somewhat tolerate the offense struggling, but the defense hasn't been good enough under him considering that's his strength.

I think he'll be a DC again somewhere and probably do quite well, his problem was he's not a head coach there were just too many decisions that he struggled with as a HC.

My previous comment was an indictment of the dysfunctional organization the 49er's have become. Not intended to be a slight directed at Mike Singletary. I think Singletary might be a good coach. It's a given that the guy has passion for the game.

some questions floating in my head on the move:

1. Will Singletary tell Martz to change QBs?
2. Will Singletary impact the offensive game plan and/or play calls?
3. If yes to 1 and/or 2 -- how will Martz react to that?
4. Will the defense be all that different under Singletary? How different can it be a third of the way through the season?
5. I wonder how MArtz is reacting to this right now? He was the only guy with head coaching experience -- and they passed him over.

I still think the Rams are more of a threat than the 49ers

The York family has a common trait. It is called stupidity. Nolan will not be without a job for long.

Other coaches who will be gone and create openings.

1. Herm Edwards
2. Andy Reid
3. Wade Phillips ( Jason Garrett is an automatic )
4. Rod Marinelli ( Millen hire casualty )
5. Marvin Lewis

Agree. Add Shanhan to that list too.

Nolan sucked. He was the one that got Smith drafted over Rodgers, and that was a disaster.

My only regret is that they didn't make Martz headcoach. He would definitely set that franchise back by at least another two years. I'm not sure what Singletary will do.
