The Norfolk State men’s basketball team is a No. 16 seed and will play No. 1 seed Florida in an NCAA Tournament first-round game Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The game is part of the West Region.

Florida (30-4) finished second in the SEC during the regular season and beat Tennessee on Sunday in the SEC Tournament championship game.

The Spartans watched from Roger Brown’s Restaurant and Sports Bar in Portsmouth on Sunday as their latest feat unfolded in a season that has included highlight-reel dunkmaster Christian Ings landing on ESPN’s Top Plays and Sunday’s one-point MEAC Tournament championship game victory over South Carolina State.

The men’s bracket also includes Liberty (Conference USA Tournament champion) and VCU (Atlantic 10 Tournament champion). Liberty (28-6) is a No. 12 seed in the South Region and plays No. 5 Oregon (24-9) on Friday in Seattle. VCU (28-6) is a No. 11 seed and plays No. 6 BYU in the East Region in Denver on Thursday.

March Madness: Here’s the bracket for the men’s NCAA Tournament

Norfolk State (24-10) — with its fourth straight 20-win season — is in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time after also appearing in 2012, 2021 and 2022. NSU, as a No. 15 seed, famously knocked off No. 2 Iowa in the 2012 opening round and since has won a First Four game (2021) with first-round losses to top seeds Gonzaga (2021) and Baylor (2022).

The Spartans MEAC Tournament title is the third in five seasons under coach Robert Jones.

This season NSU played a rugged nonconference schedule that included games against Stanford, of the ACC, and three teams that made the NCAA Tournament bracket: Tennessee (a No. 2 seed), Baylor (a No. 9 seed) and Grand Canyon (Western Athletic Conference Tournament champion and a No. 13 seed).
