To me it's more the hypocrisy. We have a bunch of ex players talking about being given all sorts of pain killers and who knows what else for their entire careers so they can play, but pot gets you suspended for a year.

What is the bigger long term risk to a players health, the pain killer or the pot? We all know the answer is not the pot.

So the NFL isn't doing this for the best interests of the players.

With Washington specifically, there's no excusing what he did. It's against the rules, he knows it, he broke them, he should be punished accordingly... (just to get this out of the way, so nobody misconstrues my post as defending his actions. Because I am not. There is no defending knowingly breaking rules that you JUST broke a year ago. It's incredibly stupid)


that said. I don't see why the NFL tests for it to begin with. It's legal across the board in 2 states (ironically the 2 that just played in the Super Bowl), and is legal with doctor approval in many others. At least the last 3 Presidents of the United States have admitted to smoking pot. It has no performance enhancing benefits. Many doctors feel the benefits outweigh the risks, to the point that toddlers have even been recommended MMJ. The Washington case is over and done, but it's something I wouldn't mind seeing the league reevaluate going forward

The debate regarding the health effects of pot has been going on a long time. From what I've seen, the individual personality combines with the pot for the eventual outcome. I know people who smoke and are engaged in full creative lives and living responsibly. I also know those who had their backbone turn into jelly and are mashed potato lumps living in their Mom's spare bedroom.

The effects of pot are really a separate issue from DW's situation. When you sign on to any job, there are employer stipulations on what you can and cannot do to stay employed. Go to work flipping hamburgars and the health code doesn't allow you to chew gum (it ends up in the food along with your saliva as you chew) and you can't wear elaborate jewelry (it finds it's way into the soup). DW knew he shouldn't be 'chewing gum' and was fully aware of the consequences. Unlike the person working in the restaurant, he was being paid a whole lot of money to abide by the employer demands. If he didn't like the rules, be like Ricky Williams and quit and don't take the money. Also, don't put your teammates at a disadvantage because they were counting on you to uphold the terms of your contract and be there when they needed you to perform.

Anyone today who considers MJ a class 3 drug, really has their head up their ass. Guy's some NFL doctors do prescribe MJ to players if they get injured.
