WR’s Making Their Mark
In last week’s game vs. Jacksonville, Anquan Boldin finished the day with 10 receptions for 115 yards, his 5th 100+ day of the year and 12th of his career. One week earlier in St. Louis, Boldin finished the afternoon with 105 yards on eight receptions while teaming with Larry Fitzgerald, who had nine receptions for 104 yards. It marked the third time this season that Fitzgerald and Boldin finished the same game with more than 100 receiving yards.
The two receivers collected 100+ yards in the first match up against the Niners in Mexico City, which is something San Francisco Head Coach Mike Nolan says his team is preparing for this week.
“For one on one match up standpoints we certainly don’t match up with them but not many teams do,” Nolan said. “They are both very good football players. The game will take its course but those two players are very good and they’re two players we’ve identified, so we’ll just have to see how the game goes and the game plans obviously plays a part in it. From a one on one standpoint we don’t have a match up corner to take one but we’ll see what we can muster up.”
In addition, Larry Fitzgerald needs only one yard to become the 11th person in team history to record over 1,000 yards in a season. It would mark the 17th time that a Cardinals receiver reached the 1,000 yard mark.
Ironically, the last Cardinal to record more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season was Boldin who caught a team-record 101 passes for 1,377 yards and eight touchdowns in his 2003 rookie season.
Anderson Back
Earlier this week the Cardinals re-signed running back Damien Anderson. Anderson spent training camp with the Cardinals this year before being released during the final roster cuts September 3rd. He originally was signed by the Cardinals as a rookie free agent in 2002 out of Northwestern and appeared in 30 games with the team over the past three seasons.
“We have two backs on the injured list and I don’t know about either one of them,” said Green on the injured Marcel Shipp and James Jackson. “We have only been carrying three running backs and that is one of the areas we have been light in, so we signed Damien.”
Anderson remained living in the valley and continued to work out, waiting for his chance to return to the NFL.
“I love the Cardinals,” said Anderson. “They’ve always been good to me so I just want to be able to contribute. I knew by my performance in camp that I could still play. It is unfortunate for Marcel and James to be hurt but that is football. I’m going to make the most of this and I’m just happy to be here.”
“If we had to play tomorrow, then Damien and JJ would be our only two backs,” said Green. “He will also play special teams and if Marcel is not able to play, which we are hopeful he can, then Damien would play and be a back up.”
Rolle Close
The Cardinals number one draft pick in 2005 is close to making his return to the football field according to Cardinals Head Coach Dennis Green. Rolle has been rehabbing in Miami following knee surgery, but has recently returned to the valley and is working with the Cardinals Training staff.
“Antrel looks very good,” said Coach Green. “He will come on the practice field tomorrow. He is getting his knee ready for football so if all goes well Thursday and Friday next week he we’ll expect him to be out there practicing to get used to football.”
The Cardinals opted to not put Rolle on injured reserved earlier in the season in hopes he could return for the last few games of the year. Although the rookie corner has missed a significant amount of time Coach Green is confident he will be able to pick up where he left off.
“I think he will play pretty well,” said Green. “Unfortunately, he only played in three games before he injured his knee, but he played extremely well in the pre season and he had a great college career. That is part of playing. He is 22 years old and playing football is exciting. I think he will be able to get back in, get right back in the groove of playing and continue to improve as a player.”
