Now this isn't football, but Mr Cub has passed away at 83.

RIP Ernie Banks - glad I got to see him and his era of ball players play, even though it was rare back then with only the Sat game of the week on TV. I was fortunate to go to a lot of Dodger games as a kid and got to see the Aarons, Mays, Clementes, Banks, Robinsons, and of course some of the greatest pitchers of all time: the Koufax and Gibson.

Grew up in Milwaukee. Saw Banks play against Milwaukee Braves in the 50's.
Really class guy and great player. RIP, Mr. Cub.

Ernie Banks is one of those baseball players that just doesn't get the respect he deserves. An amazing player.

Sidenote: Nice to see Bob Gibson getting some credit. IMO, best pitcher to EVER be on a pitchers mound, and it is not even close. Throw the stats out, and watch any clip of the guy you can find. When on, he was unhittable, and not a hyperbole unhittable, it was proven fact. The guy was that good.

With the passing of Ernie Banks and Stan Musial`s passing 2 years ago baseball has lost the last 2 shining examples of sportsmanship and how to play the game.RIP

I grew up in Chicago as a Sox fan but always admired Mr. Cub. I actually went to many more Cubs games because they were all played during the day. Banks played on some really crappy teams but man he could hit. He'd swing with his wrists and was simply amazing. I'm sure he would have left Chicago if the game were like today but I was lucky to see him - and Gibson, Musial, Boyer, Aaron, Mays, McCovey, Clemente, Koufax and others at Wrigley. RIP.

He brought a grace to the game we seldom see. He was a class act at a time when courage was badly needed. Robinson may have broken the barrier, but guys like Banks changed the game forever as well. They'll likely never make the movie, but his image was indelible. He deserves all the love we can give him.
