With the first domino falling #2 and #3 can't be too far behind. And as excited as all of us are to see what "D squared" can bring to the defense, Holian and I were talking about the years to come.... specifically the contract with Boldin. To lock Fitz in on a 6 year deal and fail to extend Boldin's deal this season would be a crime. Clearly Quan comes in as our difference maker, but where does he fall on the pay scale? Fitz, Davis, Johnson, Bryant, Pace, Starks, Jackson, and etc. are higher-paid (and some of the aforementioned are barely contributors). Then, there is the possibility (and very strong liklihood) that "D squared" will also come in ahead.

Any comments? Has the front office mentioned any plans/budegts for building a winning franchise? Do we wait until the end of the season to evaluate Quan's performance, the Cards needs, and possible veteran acquisitions?

The "common" thing in the league is to give players like Boldin a new deal after their 2nd year( most recent examples are Clinton Portis and Kris Jenkins), so I doubt he'll get it until the end of the season.

Pay Scale? Hard to say, since the detail of Fitz's deal hasn't been released yet. You have to assume that Fitz's contract contains a lot of incentives and bonuses. Boldin will probably get a "straighter" deal with less bonuses and much higher base salaries. Boldin's contract will probably have a lower total value, BUT he's probably get a bigger pay-check than Fitz at the end of the year...

Boo hoo. He signed a contract, he should honor it and renegotiate at the proper time.

Why the venom? Quan is not crying about his contract. The Cards are the one who is thinking of redoing his deal not Quan.

The paper made it clear today that Fitzgerald actually got a 4 year deal that will have to be renegotiated at that time because the cap hit will be prohibitive. It mentioned one reason for that is he will be slated to get a bonus at that time. Further, Fitz will bank 13.5mil this season. So, that means his true, upfront bonus is about 12mil. I think 12mil will be more than enough to get Boldin to sign an extension. But, that should happen as late in the season as possible.

It will definitely be interesting to see how all this contract talk with Q shakes out. Everyone says he's a team player and high character guy but that only goes so far. Fitz is a high character guy as well but it took the biggest contract in history for a rookie to get him into camp. How could he not sign? If the Cards were going to nickel and dime him he probably wouldn't be out there right now. We'll have to see how this season shakes out but if Fitz is suddenly Denny's centerpiece and Q is now a bit player we'll see how happy he is.
