O'Gorman, Brandon Valley, S.F. Washington & R.C. Stevens earn wins in State AA girls hoops

RAPID CITY — There were no surprises Thursday during the opening round of the state Class AA high school girls basketball tournament.

No. 1 seed O'Gorman, No. 2 Brandon Valley, No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington and No. 4 Rapid City Stevens each advanced with double-digit wins.

No. 1 O'Gorman 69, No. 9 Sioux Falls Jefferson 42​


The Knights (22-0) jumped out to a 25-8 first-quarter lead and increased it to 47-14 at halftime.

Sydney Terveen's 17 points and six assists, Julia Eggert's 12 points and four steals and Ruby Moore's 11 steals, six assists and four steals paced O'Gorman. Abby Mikuska added seven rebounds.

Brinley Altenburg scored 10 points and Taylor Silvernail nine for the Cavaliers (12-10). Ayleah Johnson snared eight rebounds.

No. 4 Rapid City Stevens 53, No. 5 Spearfish 41​


Stevens won the West River battle for the second time this season by getting 24 points and 11 rebounds from Taaliyah Porter.

Mackenzie Schreiber contributed nine points and Halie Peterson eight points and six assists for the Raiders (17-5).

Spearfish (17-5) received 12 points and seven rebounds from Jozie Dana, eight points from Mya Kochuten and seven rebounds from Averie Kirk.

No. 2 Brandon Valley 69, No. 7 Pierre 36​


The Lynx (20-2) dominated the first three quarters and built a 61-33 advantage on the way to the win.

Leaders for Brandon Valley included Gracie Salter (17 points, nine rebounds and five steals), Alyvia Padgett (16 points and six assists),. Amanda Lease (11 points) and Ava Kellenberger (10 points and eight rebounds).

Emery Larson recorded 12 points and Lennix DuPris 11 for the Governors (13-9). Addison Soma pitched in with eight points and six rebounds.

No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington 55, No. 6 Mitchell 38​


A 13-3 scoring spurt in the second quarter lifted Washington to a 30-17 halftime lead and the Warriors (19-3) didn't look back.

Grace Peterson and Dana Harpe each tallied 11 points and Rylan Kennett 10 for Washington. Peterson also pulled down seven rebounds.

Lauren VanOverschelde's 12 points paced Mitchell (14-8).

Friday's Games — Consolation Semifinals (Jefferson vs. Spearfish, 1 p.m. Central, and Pierre vs. Mitchell, 2:45 p.m.). Semifinals (O'Gorman vs. Stevens, 7 p.m. and Brandon Valley vs. Washington, 8:45 p.m.).

Saturday's Games — Seventh place, 1 p.m.; consolation championship, 2:45 p.m.; third place, 7 p.m.; and championship, 8:45 p.m.
