wadsworthless never "wanted to play"...he wanted to get paid....I remember screaming at the tv when he was drafted.....and calling in on a radio show and telling them the cards needed to let this chump re-enter the next years draft..

never ever draft a finance major who is being hyped as the "next Bruce Smith".... that clown never wanted to be a cardinal....and he has the very proud distinction of being the only Cards jersey I have ever pissed on.

Man this is harsh.

Complete bull****. I met Andre Wadsworth and he had a chunk the size of a quarter taken out of his leg just below the knee. It was during the Spring after the playoff win over Dallas. He told me the injury happened in the Giants game at SDS in December. (Which some people here will remember as it was the coldest game ever at SDS and it rained and sleeted.) He finished the season and played in the playoffs, and he played well.

Sorry, but I absolutely cannot stand such judgmental posts when you obviously know jack frigging squat about the person or his character and the facts of their life.

His first year wac actually quite good 5 sacks despite no training camp or preseason. the holdout was all over both salary and him wanting a clause that allowed him to void his contract if he chose to, never got that no idea where he got that idea from and he never got that in his deal.

Second season was plagued by knee injuries played 11 games. 3rd year played only 9 games. Then in the offseason had microfracture on the right knee, the 3rd surgery he'd had on that knee since drafted. then he had surgery on the left knee, both by Steadman and that was it. The Cards released him offered him a much smaller contract and then withdrew it when they saw how bad his knees were.

I think the Cards badly misjudged the situation back then they had blamed Swann's short career on Steadman and it didn't seem to dawn on them that a guy having 9 knee surgeries before the age of 30 was not the fault of the surgeon it was a guy with a ton of knee problems. Swann got ripped unfairly for years over that.

So when Andre had surgery with the same guy, without the Cards knowing, they overreacted.

I pointed this out at the time the reason he did that was because the Cards team doctor had done microfracture surgery on Eric Swann's knee without it being made public. Nobody knew it was done, then during the season Swann had to have surgery again, this time with Steadman. Steadman did the same knee again, less than a year after the Cards doctor did it. First human being to ever have had that surgery twice on the same knee in that short amount of time. Steadman was VERY honest, the Cards doctor botched the recovery he pushed Swann back so quickly he was weight bearing within days it should have been weeks. etc. Steadman was pretty brutally honest you didn't let his knee heal correctly and you probably shortened his career in the process.

Now you're Wadsworth needing a 3rd surgery on the same knee who are you going to go ,the team doctor that screwed up Swann, or Steadman?

1) What Cardinals' first-round pick DIDN'T have some sort of holdout before picks were slotted in 2011? That's not on AW, that's on management.

2) The guy's knees failed him. Hard to give him the "Bust" label when you factor in his injuries.

agreed.

Tommy Knight signed on time. I can't recall anyone else who did.

Wadsworth had injury problems and they where injuries which one could not play through. I will never call him a bust and I wish him the best because his talent was never the question and he did want to play and gave his all

Unfortunately only playing 3 seasons after being picked 3rd is a bust no matter the reason. However, SD did trade up with us keeping us from drafting Ryan Leaf scores some points.

I agree. Wadsworth enacted a plan from day 1 after the Cards drafted him to blow out his knee and have several surgeries on it.

From now on, the Cards should only draft general studies majors who are being called the next Wendell Bryant.

That was back when the cards had to wait for the TV money to come in to pay the signing bonus of their first round picks. The revenues generated by the new stadium has relieved that misery...

That's not true. Matt Leinart, Levi Brown, DRC, Beanie, and Dan Williams all had holdouts ranging from one day to one month. This was after the team moved into UofP. Many of these holdouts were precipitated by Graves' slow approach to negotiating and management's overall inflexibility; never about not having enough cash to pay signing bonuses. This includes the days at SDS.

I was just talking about how handcuffed our GM was back in the day. Graves was on Vacation until August every year...:D So I don't see your comparison as relevant.

I'm not sure when it changed but for years the Cards denied they needed the tv money to pay rookie contracts and yet every year the top pick would holdout and the holdout would end right after they got the TV money.

That's been awhile though and again the Cards insisted it was coincidence that it would happen that way.

Doesn't help explain why with the new revenue from the new stadium, the team was still having trouble signing first-rounders on-time until picks were slotted in 2011. Coincidence, or a lousy excuse on management's part.

I think to a certain extent the Cards had such a bad reputation that it was almost a foregone conclusion any agent was going to take awhile to get his first round pick signed by the Cards.

But it was clear for years that the Cards never signed a pick until after the TV money came in, we talked about it on Cards boards for years.

When I had shoulder surgery and I was going through rehab, Wads was in there as well. He had to go to therapy everyday and he could barely walk on the treadmill. I was able to talk with him many times and he is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He is for sure religious because he talked about God a lot.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind that I will never forget in one of our conversations was-

I asked him "since you are done playing football, why are you here all the time walking on the treadmill and doing all this rehab? Are you trying to get back into the NFL (hence, this was years after his career ended)? He said back to me, "I am just trying to get back to where I can go get my mail everyday"

That's the day when I knew football can change the future of one's life
