If I were the NFL and I didn't want it I would just say ocho cinco is offensive to Spanish speaking people since that's not Spanish for the number 85 it's Spanish for 8 and 5.

It's not really offensive but I think it's easier to defend than we think it's dumb that you're going to these lengths to promote yourself.

I don't really have a problem with Chad doing this I think he's a good player and good for the NFL to hve some guys like that.

Maybe it's that I still remember as a kid seeing Billy White Shoes Johnson dance in the endzone and that helped pique my interest in football?

I am not a lawyer, but how can they make him pay for jersey's like this? This is the first time I have ever seen a company trying to do this.

I'm sure there's an agreement between Reebok and Players Inc (the players union). There's a reason why jerseys that cost $5 to make sell for $80 -- lots of middlemen.

There are a lot of hidden rules on jerseys. The company that used to customize all of the NFL Shop's jerseys used to allow you to send in your old authentic jerseys and they could remove the name/numbers and put a new name/numbers on the jersey (www.exclusivepro.com). About two years ago, the NFL and Players Inc. stepped in and no longer allowed them to change jersey numbering, but they could still produce new jerseys. Why? No profit in it for the NFL or Players, plus it allowed people to reuse jerseys.

I know that there is a revenue sharing forumla for merchandise. Even though everything is made by Reebok, don't think for a minute that Reebok walks away with all 100% of what you just paid for your Tom Brady jersey. There is a NFL/team profit sharing component also.

Just as Reebok would be stuck with these C. Johnson jerseys, so would the Bengals and the NFL so some extent.

If you recall Kobe Bryant changed his jersey number and the process was long, well announced, and took effect immediately following the end of one NBA season.

I see the side of the story that says that this is a fiasco. Yes, it is Chad Ocho Cinco garnering attention.

My only problem is that the NFL is walking the fine line between classy and facist.

To force Johnson to buy out the stock of NFL jerseys is discrimination because they are singling Johnson out.

I didn't see Reebok or EA Sports up in arms when Brett Farve changed teams AFTER the Madden 09 cover was out and the 2008 apparel came out.

I know, I know it is different circumstances but the same result with a stock of Brett Farve mechandise that is useless.

I my mind the NFL is in danger of being too cute. In an effort to try and out smart one player in the league it risks opening the perverbial can of worms.

If Reebok enforces this buyout where will it end. When does the fact that Farve did the same thing. What about players that change there name like Mauric Jone-Drew did when decided to add -Drew to his jersey.

There have been players before Chad Ocho Cinco that have changed there names and those will be brought to light by the NFLPA.

Reebok and the NFL will lose this suit and rightfully so because they are wrong.

They can have the opinion that Chad is creating a fiasco, and making a mockery of the league. That is fine. But the law is the law and there hurt feeling or standards are not stronger, nor should they be, then the law of the land.

Hate the situation. Hate the player. But like it or not he has every right to change his name and Reebok/NFL has no right to force him to buy out there stock.

That is against the law. PERIOD.

Maurice changed his name while still at UCLA so he doesn't count.

Favre changed teams not names or numbers, and the sales of the new Favre jersey broke records so I doubt Reebok or the NFL feel stuck with the old ones.

I suspect the same thing would not happen with CHad but who really knows maybe a bunch of people really want an Ocho Cinco jersey?

I do agree it seems they're singling him out. The NFL used to be more fun.

I think we're missing the point here. If Reebok printed 10 million Brady jerseys and he goes out and gets hurt (which he did) and they end up getting stuck with 5 million jerseys then Reebok would have been affected by something that's a part of the game (and therefore risk associated with playing players monies associated with their name).

Reebok has to assume the risk normally associated with the game such as injury, poor performance, disgruntled contracts, etc. Having a player change their name is definitely outside the norm and Chad should be held responsible.

BUNK! Reebok isnt going to lose money on Brady Jerseys. The guy being hurt isnt going to stop the sell of those jerseys one iota. He is young and will be back next year. He is a 3 time SB winning QB and League and SB MVP. People will still buy his jersey a million times over. The injury doesnt change that. bad analogy.
A better analogy would be when Jason Taylor was traded to the Skins. I guarentee that there were some premade Miami jerseys that never made it to the shelves.

Someone is asking Reebok to be difficult here and I have to assume it is the NFL. Just like Taylor going to the Skins, Chad changing his name would get people to buy his jersey just the the fans in Wash.

Chad Johnson is a moron, but Reebok really has no legal ground to stand on. He changed his name legally so he did nothing wrong, not his fauly Reebok got ahead of themselves and made a bunch of jerseys, plus I am sure they could still sell some of them at a discounted rate. CJ is a total idiot but he isn't responsible for paying for product that a company made with his name on it just because he changed his name.

What he should do is make this proposal to Reebok.

I Ocho Stinko promise to donate 4 million dollars to charity if you Reebok will release the Chad Johnson name. Reebok and Chad do something for humanity....ahhhh....I must be living in a parallel universe.
