It's Saturday. The Suns don't play until Monday and the D'Baks play in three hours. A few things have been deserving mention and now I have the time.

1. Rodd Newhouse's firing. Rodd was a friend and a nice man but Oliver Ross, Orlando Huff and our failed FA kick returners got him fired, methinks. Rodd's job was to scout the other NFL teams for talent and tendencies. We have not chosen free agents very well since we stole Bert Berry so I'm not surprised Rodd was fired. I wish him well.

2. Rod Graves. Another friend and as fine a person as I've ever known. His contract expires in 11 days and I'm wondering if he'll be back. Rod was hired by Bill Bidwill years ago as his personal assistant and worked his way up to VP of Football or whatever term they are using these days. He spent over 20 years in scouting, starting with the Philly USFL team and then working for various NFL franchises, including KC and Chicago.
Rod is a consensus builder, a good organizer, and had Bill's trust enough to talk the old man into start giving bells and whistles in contracts and into changing the Cards antiquated rookie insurance policy.
As Michael Bidwill has assumed most of the power within the organization, he used Rod Graves as his de facto GM but remember that Graves wasn't Michael's hire. Graves may be too smooth and measured for Michael.
Michael's reputation is not only that he's hands-on, but that he tends to interfere or micromanage many things. If Mike wants to assume a Jerry Jones role, he may not need Rod Graves, especially if super-scout Steve Kiem is ready to become head of player personnel.
Newhouse's failure reflects badly on Graves but the last few drafts reflect well, because Graves revamped the whole scouting department and built the boards that Denny Green has mined so well.
If I had to guess, I'd say Graves will get kicked all the way up to GM where he can smooth Mike's rough edges, or he'll be let go. Michael ruffles many feathers, if what I hear is true.

3. I think the Cards made a mistake allowing current season ticket holders to buy extra tickets. That shut out a lot of new fans and many of those tickets will end up in the enemies' hands.

4. Most of the improvement in our offensive line will come from guys who have already been here, not from the rookies. Pittsburgh regularly drafts olinemen, lets them learn for two or three years, then moves them up when they are ready. We haven't had that luxury but may have it now.

5. The trees planted around the grassy area of the Cards parking are very small and won't throw much shade for years to come.

6. I'm a little worried about the lack of a successful tray move into the stadium yet. And the freeway overpass has been built but the access ramps are many moons from being completed. We may have severe traffic problems this first season.

7. I banned nazaquad because he was a troll. Trolls will always be banned. We have a smack board and trolls can go there. That rule will never change.

8. Leinart may be a holdout because he'll want a QB premium and his agent is Tom Condon, if I'm not mistaken. It matters not. I'd rather he not play at all this year.

9. The off-seaon doldrums start now and will be worse than ever because there isn't even the usual Cards worry about signing draft picks.

10. As we begin our fith ASFN year, a special thanks to Mike Olbinski and Bob (jw7) for holding things together in 2004. A further thanks to all the moderators, past and future.

11. The posters make this site. The knowledge, humor, and shared misery have brightened many of my days. If you still lurk, don't be shy. Join us.

12. 10-6 and a wild card spot in 06.

Thanks Skkorp, but 2 things.

You don't give yourself enough credit. I know this site costs a lot of money, and you are on a dedicated server instead of cheaper shared hosting, yet you won't take donations or sell advertising. I don't think people appreciate how much it takes out of your own sweat and wallet to keep a site like this going.

Second, the reason this board is free of spam and advertising and trolls and profanity is that the mods do a kick-butt job and are unpaid volunteers. jkf296 wrote the rules of the site that we can use as a guideline, Chris Sanders singlehandedly diffused mayhem on the Suns board during this up-and-down playoff run, and KLL is by far the best bulletin board moderator I have ever seen. (If you are thinking about re-registering under an alias - forget it. KLL will spot you and ban your butt.)

Heck, thirty-two has been a mod for less than 3 weeks and she is already trashing spam. Krepitch and Djaughe in P&R have a job I wouldn't let my dog do, but still pretty impressive to keep that place somewhat sane.

Thanks Skkorp. I will come back and disagree with your points later (well except the thanks to Mike and jw7 which was brilliant :raccoon:)

Ditto. As an out-of-state Cards fan I have to say that this site has been my saving grace. It's hard to talk about the Cardinals in Eagles country and I really appreciate having this place to come to and talk about the team. Friends and family thought it was so cool that I met so many of you guys -- in person -- when I was out in AZ in 2004. There's a family feeling here and that's a testament to Skkorp and all the mods here who work hard to make this site so great.

I don't want to talk outta turn and I think this idea might have been nixed in the past, but what about a voluntary donation option? Just throwing it out there.

We get the press releases as well and post them

I negleted to mention Ian and Jo Sparkes. Without them we never would have had press access. Ian and Jo built this site as much as anyone.

I also neglected the ASFN writers but I will make amends later.

And jw7 is right, the mods have been fabulous.

This sight is my Cardinals feeding ground year round. I have been hear for most of the time and enjoy reading all the posts without the stupidness you find on other boards. I appreciate all the work put into this and hope we can all celebrate our super bowl win in two years together.

Like Jersey Girl Cards Fan, I'm an out-of-stater which makes it hard to not only get my daily Cardinal news fix, but to be able to talk to anyone who can name more than 2 players on the roster.

Thanks to Skkorp and everyone who posts here for keeping me in the loop!

I live in state and find it hard to find anyone who can do that. This site is the best!

I read this board almost daily. I really appreciate ASFN after seeing some of the other message boards. Thanks for keeping the advertising, spam, trolls, etc. off the board. This is the foundation of a great fan site. The posters, from all over the world, with all their different points of views make it probably my favorite site on the internet. It's great to learn every detail about a team I have obsessed about for years.

Thank you Jim and all the others that have built this site. You did a great job.

I echo the other sentiments and posts. This is a fantastic board for those of us out of state who are life-long Cardinal fans. Together with Sunday Ticket, I am more connected to the Cardinals than when they still played in St. Louis.

Thanks so much!!!

I would like to post my thanks also. As a member who came over from the AOL days I don't know where else I could get so much Cardinal info.

i really enjoy the fact that a goup of people of all manner of age, nationality and political opinion can be a united tribe on game day.
The various boards on this site have educated me to a point of chanaging my username and NOT getting into as many politcal arguments.
It's good to love people you disagree with.

Rod is an excellent "public relations" person, works well with Denny and is not power hungry. The drafts have been excellent over the past 3 years and they have done well in free agency. Michael Bidwill, Graves and Green appear to be a good team. I'd like to see Graves retained.

6. I'm a little worried about the lack of a successful tray move into the stadium yet. And the freeway overpass has been built but the access ramps are many moons from being completed. We may have severe traffic problems this first season.

I think the stadium will be spetacular but during the first year there will be plenty of "bugs" that need to be fixed. In less than 3 months they will be playing a game. I can't believe it will be 100% ready. We season ticket holders will have to live with some problems for awhile. It still will be so much better than Sun Devil Stadium.
