Relevant Excerpt:

"A friend wanted – and got – press access to the NFL football team the Arizona Cardinals. He had a fan website, and pushed me to write articles for him – which I both dreaded and longed to try. His name was Jim Skane, and it was he who gave me the confidence to keep writing. I actually got to talk to Emmit Smith, Anquan Boldin, and others. It was such a blast."

Good to see you brighteyes

Woah at the website. I copy pasted into a word document so I could read. Whoever decided to put that background and then that color text should be alerted that you cant see it!

Excuse my ignorance, but is Brighteyes the famous Jo Sparks (Sp?)? I really enjoyed her articles, and only recently realized, it's been a long time since I've seen her name.

I am so happy for you, Jo. Wow----this is such great news!

Skkorp did the same kind of encouraging for me---and I too (to a lesser extent than you) am now published (Stories I Tell My High School English Students---For Encouraging a new Generation of Writers and Poets).

I have found that a journalistic style, combined with imaginative aspects is what today's readers relish (take Laura Hillenbrand, for example)---and had Skkorp not kept encouraging me, I don't know if I ever would have published a book.

There are people in our lives that nudge, motivate and nurture us (both with loyal and tough love)---and so I still think about and feel grateful to Skkorp practically every day.

So happy to see you mention him---I just know how proud he is of you. He always was so proud of you (he used to PM me and others and say---hey check out this new great article by Jo!)....and, of course, he always will be.

Congratulations, Jo. Keep carpe-ing the most out of your diems...you, your family and, of course, your Muse!

Best, always,

Mitch

Congrats Jo. It is great to see you on the board. I remember Jim introducing us on the sidelines in Flag many years ago. You were with Ian and your dog (not the black one). Keep up the good work.

Yeah, Jo. I hope you and your husband have NFL Sunday Ticket up there in Oregon.:newcards:

Unfortunately not, or more accurately yes they do in oregon but one look at our house and the installer laughed.

Lots of trees now way on earth to get a signal, we rely on NFL replay and watch the games later.

Congratulations Jo. From your articles on the Cardinals, I always knew you could make it as an author. Good luck and say "hi" to my buddy Nidan for me. I miss him on the Cards board.

The Cardinals are bigger than just a football team.

From the "official establishment" (players, front office staff, beat writers and radio guys) to the guy who greets you at the parking lot gate, the family who sits in front of you at games to the guy in the pickup with a Cardinal bumper sticker who beeps at you on the NJ turnpike or the ASFN'er who "respectfully disagrees" with your assessment of a rookie lineman - we're all Cardinals.

As are (in a Vonnegutian sense) Skkorp and Pat T who, on various levels, are still with us today.

And those (like Jo and Nidan)who have just stepped away for awhile and "are checking in."

Jo- Good to hear from you. Keep on keeping on.

Welcome back Jo. Congratulations on your book. It is great to hear from you and Nidan again. I miss your articles on the Birds, but am stoked at your success. Several years ago, my wife and I toured the Pacific NW. We fell in love with the Oregon Coast, so I can appreciate your choice of home. Please make your check in's a regular happening. We miss you.
