Superbowl, Homeboy!
This is a hard game to do any analysis on to be honest. The Cardinals is in the 2nd tier of teams and Patriots are in the lower 4th tier and it showed. This game was never in danger and Patiots didn’t look good. So was the dominance due playing well or are the Patriots just that bad? Honestly do not know.
With that said, a bit different analysis this time, because while I liked some of the plays and adjustments made I cannot evaluate if it was on the basis on a bad team or we simply improved.
SCHEME - What I liked…
The team adjusted in a couple of ways that I called for.
A bit of a change-up in the passing game. We saw Reiman involved again in the passing game. A good sign. But I would like to see more. Higgins only had one target and catch. Spread the ball around!.
The surprise was the involvement of Dortch and the quick passes to him. I really like this to keep the defense honest and not only playing run or intermediate passing.
The run blocking scheme was adjusted. The guards, especially Brown was staying home and instead we saw Froholdt on pulls and reaching the second level more frequently.
Kyler showing nice touch on when to run the ball. Good decision making - the Patriots just played him really well, so not that much production from Kyler’s runs.
Something new on the 2nd drive. First a short yardage run with DJ Dallas in motion and taking the snap under center, followed by wildcat direct snap to Connor. Solid gains without being spectacular, but more twists to the scheme.
SCHEME - What I didn’t like…
Forcing the ball to MHJ again-again. 6 targets - only two receptions. Marvin was dominated by Christian Gonzalez.
I hate the lack of consistency in mixing it up. On 3rd and long, Do we not have another play than throwing contested balls to MHJ?
Two targets for Wilson? Why not more?
Lack of roll outs passes.
Kyler got saved by a penalty on a STUPID pass.
O-Line
I liked the adjustment of trying different schemes. The pulling guards were replace by center and back-side tackle pulls. Not only did is bring a neutralize the defenses DT shooting the G gaps, but it allowed Froholdt to play to his strengths. On the long Conner run (4:25 1Q), Froholdt and Williams pulls and opened a huge gap for Connor. What I liked the most was that it made the seal block on the play side DT so much easier, because instead of Froholdt having to make a very hard block (with G pulling), Brown got to make a very easy down block (with Froholdt pulling). More adjustments like this, please.
We saw the exact same blocking on the TD fumble recovery, but instead of Dotch faking it to the right and Connor running left, it was now Dotch taking the hand-off from motion running left with Connor faking right.
Same pulls at 9:51 2Q, but to the opposite side. Nice adjustment by Froholdt and PJJ with Froholdt kicking out the Edge and PJJ pulling into the hole.
A new scheme out of the 12 with 14:15 2Q with McBride motioning out to seal the edge behind Reiman and Reiman blocking down behind the O-line and making a pancake on a 1 DT shooting the G gap, which was the exact player that killed the run game in the last 3 games. Nice adjustment!
One small gain I would like to point out at 1:55 2Q. Williams makes a solid block to open the hole. Excellent combo block between Froholdt and Adams. Adams seals and Froholdt did what he does best and reached the second level to block the MLB, which resulted in a nice 6 yard gain.
Up and down game by Froholdt. Really good plays, but a couple mistakes. Love that he had multiple 1-1 blocks against Barmore and made the blocks.
Sack on Kyler 0:55 2Q. Froholdt gives up a sack and holding to a DT shooting the gap, but get ZERO help from Brown that had no one to block, but seemed more focused on getting ready to set up the screen for Connor. Not a good look for both Froholdt and Brown.
Look at Froholdt on the long Dotch reception. BEAUTIFUL to see a center 30 yards downfield.
Connor run at 11:06 3Q we had a zoneblocking play, with everyone blocks down. Connor cuts it and gains 12 yards. Why are we only seeing a run blocking like this now? This would have been the exact blocking we should have utilized in the last 3 weeks. (called back )
Adams is the fulltime starter now and for the better. He is better in the run game. Just see how he blocked two players on Connor’s first TD. He is more stout at the point of attack in pass-pro, but still struggling with the technique in pass-pro. Improving, but also needed.
