Exposure, playing time, and track record of developing players for the next level are the three biggest cherries to offer recruits to come to your school.

Good point.

That's why Olson has been able to create and maintain a great program...Some question wether he or his assistants can offer that 3rd cherry now.

I HOPE Sendek and his assistants can achieve those 3 "cherries".

I think weather, girls, things like that may be overemphasized, but I would be surprised if it didn't have some effect on recruits.

It probably is overemphasized, but(I'm assuming you went to ASU) how many of your friends in college were from the east coast, and did they emphasize that those are the reasons that they went to ASU? Or friends from the midwest?

I know everyone I met from the east and midwest continually talked about things like those.

My point is that we had coaches that didn't sell that.

Freshman year roomed with someone from DC, and someone from Cleveland. The two main things that people from other areas would always mention would be the weather and the party scene. Of course there is more than that, but that's the rep at this point.

For good or for bad, that rep isn't going to change.

My roommates were from California, Ohio, and Michigan, and they pretty much said the same.

Like it or not, the coaches have to sell that rep(not the party scene), but they also have to sell the education. There's a lot to sell in Az, that's why Maricopa county is the 2nd fastest growing county in the nation...That shows that the area will sell itself, now the coaches need to start selling THEIR programs.

I think our coaches are doing that finally.

Ty Abbott sure looks like a solid pickup.

It'll be interesting watching the change in style of play for ASU next season. It looks like it'll be 3 guards and Pendergraph and Boateng manning the post. Hopefully a few of the younger front court players step up to provide some depth down low, as depth certainly won't be a problem at the guard/wing positions.

George Odufuwa is transferring, which will open up another scholarship for ASU's 08 class. Fortunately, it sounds like the kid was in very good academic standing so this transfer won't hurt ASU's APR score. It'll be interesting to see who ASU uses this open scholarship on as they're very high on Rotnei Clarke(then again, who isn't?), but their backcourt is already full and they could use some frontcourt depth.

ASU also needs a PG that can put the ball in the hoop. Clarke or a big would work although I think it's going to be tough pulling Clarke out of the Midwest with Kansas in the fold and his Dad getting a gig at Oral Roberts.

It'd definitely be hard to pull Clarke out of the midwest, but last I heard ASU is still in his top 3. Clarke would definitely fit the bill as a great shooter, but with 6 guards already on the roster by the time Clarke would set foot on campus, it'd probably be smarter for ASU to go after a big man...Though, with the lack of quality division 1 talent on ASU's roster over the years, I wouldn't turn away a potentially great guard even if ASU already had 8 guards on their roster;)

Isn't Sendek's incoming freshman class already five in number? Six would be one of the biggest I've ever heard of. I admit I don't follow this as closely as most of you.

Yes.

It's the following class that we're referring to. ASU only had 2 open schlies for that class, and they've already got 2 verbals, so now they've got an open spot for a 3rd player.

Yep, I'm hoping ASUs starting 5 next year is:

C Boateng
PF Pendergraph
SF James Harden
SG Christian Polk
PG Jamelle McMillan

Its a bit undersized, but certainly leaps and bounds better than what we've seen at ASU in recent years. Boateng will hopefully be able to take some of the pressure of Pendergraph (though I've heard he's much better at this point on the defensive end of the court). Harden is 6'5'', so a bit undersized if he's having to guard opposing SF's, but I've heard his defense is good, so maybe he can hold is own. I think Christian Polk will grow a lot during the off season, and not being the only guy on the floor who can shoot from outside should mean he'll have more open shots. I'm very excited about ASU next year, I'm hoping they can at least make the NIT.

It looks like Chad Goldstein is back on the team as a walk on, and former Arizona HS player of the year Ty Morrison is thinking about joining the team as well.
