War Room Analysis:
Jerome Mathis
WR, Hampton
Dan Pompei analysis
Was considered a fourth- or fifth-round pick until he ran a 4.26 40 at the Combine. Also had a nice performance at the Gridiron Classic. Plays as fast as he times. Separates from defenders. Is an Olympic-caliber sprinter. Hands are a bit inconsistent. Is not a polished route-runner. Is inconsistent. Does not relish blocking responsibilities. Has character issues.

News
Nobody showed more speed at the NFL Combine that Mathis. His stock has been on the rise all winter, thanks to impressive work at the Gridiron Classic. Draft expert Gil Brandt and Cowboys coach Bill Parcells caught him at 4.25 in the 40, faster than Deion Sanders' Combine record 4.28. The task now for Mathis is to build upon his speed, and prove he's ready for the NFL. The biggest question now is how Mathis will transition from a small-college star to NFL receiver.

Mathis put on a show for scouts at Gridiron Classic, scoring on a 26-yard reception and a 38-yard run off a reverse. He finished with 108 yards of total offense on two catches for 59 yards and two carries for 49 yards, in addition to a 35-yard kick return.

He was an Division I-AA All-America team member as a return specialist, led the country with an average of 35.5 yards per return and set a Division I-AA career record with five kick returns for touchdowns. He also was the two-time NCAA East Regional champion in the 200-meter dash.

Add this guy and you get a 4th WR to stretch the field and an instant upgrade in the return game.

another workout warrior...oh great!

Someone else posted this a few weeks back about drafting him. When I looked up his strengths and weakness it read that he had "trouble holding onto the ball and tends to drop the easy passes"

Yeah exactly what we need a fast wr who cant catch!

You know what i don't get is why evry article gives whether or not the player got Gil Brandt's stamp of approval or not. What's this guy done since the 70's? If they want to get a guy's opininon that carries some water and who's actually ran a draft within the past 50 years then why don't they get Ron Wolf's opinion? I just hate that these articles say Gil Brandt timed him at 4.65 in the 40.Like his time is more accurate than the scouts who do it for a living. Hell,he's so old, it probably takes him a couple tenths of a second to click off his watch. Sorry, i just needed to rant  . As for Mathis, i think the Cards will take a speed WR with one of their 3rd rounders.I think Thorpe or Parrish may be better picks than Mathis.

Sounds like Bryan Gillmore to me, and we all remember how much he helped out our passing game  . When will people realize that it takes more than flat out speed to be a deep threat? It's not that simple.

Well, if we figure that he will beat his man deep 3/5 times, but only catches the ball 1 time.
I guess if we need a quick score this may be a good option.

I think that if Larry Brackins is there in the 5th, we should take him. lol......maybe??

We havent filled Gilmores spot yet.

My thought exactly.

This ridiculous thought of getting a speed guy is way out of control.

You got to catch the ball, block, and get open in order to be a wide reciever. Just running fast does not fit the bill.

See James Jett.

Peace

NOTE
I wasn't looking for a speed guy. I want THE Best return-man in the draft. It's as simple as that. I really don't care if we take Mathis or Sproles at #95. Both would probably be 4th on the depth chart at their position, BUT they would bring an instant upgrade in our return game AND it would stop the use of star receivers as returnmen...

We were ranked #26 in punt returns and #28 in kick-off returns. Something needs to get done!!

People are going to think that I'm out of my mind. But I would take Sproles with our last pick of the first day.

I'm with you 100%!

Sproles would be an excellent 3rd down back and have all-pro returnman potential.
